We have long been bothered by Walt Disney films. They portray wimpy, ignorant fathers (Beauty and the Beast, Alladin) and disobedient daughters (The Little Mermaid, Alladin). The daughters are always bailing the father’s out of a situation and the disobedience of the daughters always leads to happiness with no consequence. That is not what we want to teach our children so we stay away.
Eh, to be fair, The Little Mermaid did portray Triton as being awesome instead of a wimp, and besides, at least Ariel redeemed herself by cleaning up her mess (if anything, the original tale that Disney adapted was FAR worse in that regard. In fact, I’d argue the mermaid in Hans Christian Anderson’s version of the tale should have gone to Hell for what she did, even with her relenting on killing the Prince.). If you ask me, that movie was a LOT better than Disney’s gross mishandling of Beauty and the Beast.
