Oregon: Catholic agency withdraws from United Way over Planned Parenthood

  December 28, 2010

At the direction of Archbishop John Vlazny of Portland, Catholic Community Services has withdrawn from United Way of Lane County because of United Way’s funding of Planned Parenthood. The decision will cost Catholic Community Services 4% of its budget.

Two other Catholic agencies-- PeaceHealth and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul-- receive funding from United Way of Lane County. Archdiocesan spokesman Bud Bunce said both agencies are expected to withdraw from United Way as well.

Now this would be an appropriate scenario to do a second collection...

Explain the pull out from United Way and the reasons... and encourage parishoners to redirect their United Way contribution to the Catholic social service agency.

PRAISE THE LORD!

Now they need to spread the word at the churches. If they are against the practice no support what so ever should be given to assist them otherwise you are party to the act.

KV has a really nice Conservative Catholic Pro Life Twitter page now set up and it is awesome all the instant news we ar getting from LifeSite/FrPavone ect... on these issues.

The Church is removing its participation in allot of venues that do not support Pro Life/Catholic Teachings across the USA.

Kinda sad, but it is vital to defend the faith and teachings.

ok.

I have never given to UW because of its support for abortion.
I have vocally opposed UW drives at work even though management was strongly pushing them.

But if the Catholics pull out on the receiving end, won’t that make the 4% available to PP?

They should take the money and oppose the fund drives.

United Way is an umbrella org that funds Planned Parenthood, and embryionic stem cell research for a whole host of Poster Child diseases.

Another thing you can do with United Way — although they do keep part of your donations......is to name the charities that you want your money to go to.

Better yet, would be to abstain from United Way and give money directly to the Catholic minisitries which you wish to fund.

Or pro-lifie ministries you wish to fund.

In my experience, United Way is a real scam! Excessive money is used at the top!

I stopped supporting the local United Way five years ago when they deleted the Boy Scouts from their list of participants. The local Boy Scouts prudently ban homosexual counselors.

We hear very little of the United Way in Michigan any more. Its overhead is incredibly high and it funds a number of politically correct left-wing causes (e.g. Planned Parenthood).

The NFL had been a big supporter of the United Way but switched to Breast Cancer prevention this year.

United Way is garbage. I risked my job out of college refusing to contribute to the United Way. My bosses boss tried to wear me down to give anything. Nope - sorry. I kept my job.

I don’t disagree with this but hasn’t the United Way always supported Planned Parenthood?

I stopped sending money to United Way many years ago. They claimed that you could choose the organizations you DIDN’T WANT your money to go to, but they were lying because they allot a percentage to each organization they support before they even get the money. If you say you want your money to go to A, but not to B, B will still get the same percentage alloted to it beforehand.

For the past 25 years, I have sat on the board of what for around here is a very large non-profit agency providing services to children and adults with MR and/or autism. Our board is overwhelmingly Orthodox and Roman Catholic. We pulled out of the United Way years ago over this very issue.

I wrote on another thread about a month ago about UW of Lane County and discussions I had at my previous employer (a major UW partner business) about this very situation, the reason for my consistent refusal to participate in the program.

I'm glad there is finally a bigger player in the discussion about UW an their support for PP.

I think the UW of Lane County runs an effective and efficient program aside from the PP connection. Hopefully more people will step up and tell them why they opt out at their employers' fund campaigns.
