Mexico's epidemic of violence first erupted in 2006, according to most accounts. But an ex-Muslim from India, who serves as a Christian pastor along the Texas-Mexican border, believes the problem began much earlier, with human sacrifice, witches, and the adoration of death in ancient Aztec days.
(SNIP) "A large majority of the Valley's population is Catholic, but the Catholicism here is mixed up with ancient pagan rites, witchcraft, false religions like Santeria, Voodoo, Palo Mayombe, and other demonic cults, and the worship of false saints like 'Saint' Death and Jesus Malverde," Elijah said.
"Basically, it all adds up to Satan worship, which feeds the violence and every other problem, like poverty, drought, hunger, chronic ill health, lack of jobs, and hopelessness," he said.
While the main focus of his ministry is evangelism, he said there's so much demonic activity it has to be dealt with in order to reach the lost.

COUNTRY: Chiapas (Mexico)
DESCRIPTION:Chiapas is the southernmost state in Mexico. Since 1994, the Mexican government has fought against the Zapatista paramilitary group in Chiapas. Many of the marginalized Chiapan peasants are indigenous people descended from the Mayas.
Category: Hostile Nation
Religion: Statistics are unavailable for this region.
Ideology: Mixture of Amerindian spiritism and liberation theology
Head of State: Governor Juan José Sabines Guerrero
Those who follow Catholicism blended with pagan rituals in the region resent evangelical Christians because they no longer participate in pagan rituals and refuse to contribute to town-wide parties that involve heavy drinking. Evangelicals present a threat to their control in the state. Christians face harassment from neighbors and from local political and religious leaders. They are often forcibly relocated out of communities.
Ephesians 6:12
The link above is for another article from this series that details how Missionaries in Mexico are seing more seekers and converts due to the violence.
I sealed a drug house after a raid a year or so back. Inside the house was a freaking shrine to Mary painted in garrish blue colors like Hindu paintings of Shiva. Candles, statues and all the other paraphenalia of idolatry. Very religious folks, I guess.

This is the style of MANY/MOST countries of the third world who have the family powers who just won't share.
We have essentially the same structure but they are taxed and required to share the bounty...and there is more "bounty" because the governement is made up of duly elected (not selected) representatives.
Mexico IS better off from 100 years ago and is the "giant of the north" compared to its brethern south of them but they still have a LONG way to go.
We have our share of poor who still have superstitions, voodoo, witchcraft, animal sacrifice and Satan worship....and they aren't ALWAYS the poorest. The poorest, least educated and dumbest are lumped together sometimes.
The Satan worshippers are the SAME as those relative moralists who, essentially, make themselves God. Humility and obedience to God and His laws/absolutes/commandments are unknown to them. They'll continue their path to hell until they repent. That's not hard to do...but it does require humility and obedience. Satan and his souls of the damned have a fertile field to work. He wants to steal as many souls for his hell as he can.

Most Carib African religions went underground during slave days. In order to practice their religion openly the adherents used Catholic saints’s images but substituted the pantheon of their gods for the actual saint. For example s Chango the voodoo god of thunder, lightning and fire is represented by Saint Barbara.
The Virgin Mary in Santeria and Voodoo is a symbol for Yemaya who in that pantheon is the ruler of seas and lakes, she rules over the maternity and is mother of all.
So what you see as being Catholic is actually the usurption of Catholic images to non Catholic religion.
