Santorum is a “Wafer” Madness Believer!

There is much to discuss in the feature story on Rick Santorum’s faith that has been served up by The New York Times. There is lots of interesting information, some questionable information and then a pretty large chunk of missing information.

However, I think many traditional Catholic believers will start reading this piece — after all, it’s the story of how one normal American Catholic turned into a traditional Roman Catholic — and then find themselves stuck right about here.

As members of St. Catherine of Siena, a parish here in the wealthy Northern Virginia suburb of Great Falls, the Santorums are immersed in a community where large families are not uncommon and many mothers leave behind careers to dedicate themselves to child-rearing, as Mrs. Santorum has. Mr. Santorum has been on the church roster as a lector, reading Scripture from the pulpit.

The parish is known for its Washington luminaries — Justice Antonin Scalia of the Supreme Court is a member — as well as its spiritual ardor. Mass is offered in Latin every Sunday at noon — most parishes have Mass only in English — and each Wednesday parishioners take turns praying nonstop for 24 hours before a consecrated communion wafer, a demanding practice known as Eucharistic adoration.

First of all, I think it would be more accurate to say that parishioners take part in a 24-hour cycle of unbroken prayers, with most participating for an hour — a short period of devotion that, for a traditional believer in a number of different traditions, would not be all that “demanding.” The wording in the story is a bit unclear. What does it mean to “take turns praying nonstop”?

However, the fingernails-on-chalkboard moment in this passage for many readers will be the return of the W-word — “wafer.”

We used to take communion at the Methodist church of my youth. Guess I’m just another “Jesus Eater”.

Not really, he’s a big government liberal. His “holier than thou” persona is a big whopper of an act. True believers don’t believe in robbing one person (through taxes), to pay for another (like Social Security, Medicare, etc., etc.).

Nor do they believe in removing the ability of people to govern themselves. Rick Santorum hates freedom, and think he can channel one one of the biggest statists of them all: Abe Lincoln.

Santorum is the only person running for President who falls below Romney, including Obama. If we’re going to be run through, I’d rather it be done quickly, and without the theocratic babble at the same time. I love Godly people in Government, I hate people trying to replace God WITH Government (especially when they pretend to do it in God’s name). “Never” to Santorum, “NEVER.”

You mean kinda like Newt's continued support of ethanol subsidies, green energy incentives, and whole new federal agencies?

And another Obamney supporter appears on the scene.

The say that as if it's a bad thing. He's a lector ... a reader .... not a person on a payroll for anything suspicious. Good grief.

Demanding?! What?

Actually cripple, I know your infatuation with Santorum, so I’ll ignore your misplaced ire. I support Newt, and have since before Free Republic was declared as “Newt Country” by Jim Robinson. As a matter of fact, I detailed exactly why a long time ago. None of the Republicans running are “Great” choices, but Santorum is the worst of the whole lot.

I’m sorry you are resorting to “Obamney” name calling, because I know you’re better than that. I’ve already said that none of the candidates were perfect, but of all of them, I think Gingrich’s feet could be held to the fire. Santorum is a big liberal, who think’s he’s been called upon from on high, and wants to channel the statist who brought us to civil war, Abe Lincoln.

Santorum will be out of the running before very long anyway, since he’s merely been a spoiler for Romney. If either of those two gets the nod, I’ll be voting 3rd party, the way the Founders intended.

2008 ~ JDW11235 ~ too late for the Obama Truth Team but right on time for the Obots.

Abraham Lincoln saved the Union and freed the slaves. He continues to have enemies. Yours are fighting words in my circle.

You'll need to do better than that to get respect around here.

Naw, they are usually more organized than that. Paulistas also know to not trash Abraham Lincoln on FR. They can do that on their own party propaganda lists, but not here.

It's a Mittbut gone feral ~ his mommy will be calling for him soon.

As if I care what your opinion is, or if 3.5 years is long enough to garner your approval. I assure you, I neither want it, nor care for it.

None of the Republicans running are “Great” choices, but Santorum is the worst of the whole lot.

Why because he believes in supporting the Catholic Church through reading the readings at church. Sitting in silence for an hour or so every Wednesday. This is NOTHING about him but a slam on the Catholic Church. I am so glad that Santorum is doing so well tomorrow. These crappy stories are ridiculous. The only good news is very few people will read such filth.

Santorum will be out of the running before very long anyway, since he’s merely been a spoiler for Romney.

Prove that? Name one state where Santorum took votes from Newt and he would have won? You can’t do it. But I can name two states where Newt stole votes from Santorum and let Romney win....Michigan and Washington. So who is the spoiler for Romney? NEWT GINGRICH IS. Newt the very guy who will win ONE state tomorrow.....that is so funny. I am glad that American people are smarter than you.
