Catholic Church News Image of Leading Jesuit college sacks dissident professor

Several students are protesting the decision by Boston College to not renew the contract of an adjunct professor in its School of Theology and Ministry who has openly questioned why the Catholic church won’t ordain women.

The Boston College mission statement on its website talks about the Jesuit foundation of the school that makes it unique. It reads: “No other institution so explicitly embodies the fundamental human desire to know.”

But after Father John Shea, a professor of pastoral care and counseling, asked church leaders for a theological explanation for why women are not being ordained to the priesthood of the Catholic church, he was let go. After nine years, Shea will leave his position at the end of this semester. He refused to comment.

The school says, as a matter of policy, it does not discuss personnel decisions. But several of the BC students who are protesting the decision say there’s a climate of intolerance at the Jesuit university around openly discussing sensitive issues such as the ordination of women.

“I think the reason he was let go was because he was causing trouble,” said John Falcone, who worked as a graduate assistant with Shea.

Last year Shea wrote directly to Cardinal Sean O’Malley, telling him that he would step aside from active ministry until women are allowed to be ordained. Falcone says Shea has since paid a price for this position.

“This is a good first step. ALL CATHOLIC INSTITUTIONS should ... throw out all teachers not in line with the teachings, etc ....

Well said! It will be a difficult task since many Catholic colleges sold their souls to the state at the Land O Lakes conference in the 60’s when they stopped being run by their Orders, went to lay boards, and accepted gov’t money. This has become so entrenched that it is most likely impossible for many to reform. We might have to start fresh - Ave Maria, St. Thomas Aquinas, et al.

We do need to FIGHT BACK, yet this might be a better strategy, maybe not, just thoughts.

I was almost afraid to click on this, for fear the "dissident" was someone insisting on orthodoxy! ;-)

This is heartening, however. And I'll bet Fr. Shea strays from orthodoxy in other areas, too -- never heard of a women's ordination proponent who was otherwise orthodox!

It may not be huge, but it’s a step in the right direction.

I’d like to see somebody (the local bishop, in other words) get after his order on disciplining him, or otherwise withdrawing from the diocese. Even a religious order can only operate in a diocese with the permission of the bishop.

Let us pray for a TOTAL cleansing of all schools and universities that claim to be “Catholic.”

&&&
Amen to that.

Maybe there’s hope for the Jebbies yet.

. . . after Father John Shea, a professor of pastoral care and counseling, asked church leaders for a theological explanation for why women are not being ordained to the priesthood of the Catholic church . . .

This being the case, he is too dumb to teach grade school, let alone in college. This has been explained over and over, including by Blessed JPII in several apostolic letters.

He that hath ears, let him hear. Or take a hike.

intollerance?

seems the only intollerance is from the left wing radicals.

All the students who are supporting this should also be let go.

Photobucket Rev. Mother Superior is chasing him out the door with her ruler! Maybe she can whack some sense into him, but I seriously doubt it.

The guy is an adjunct professor. Meaning he has a yearly contract. He not only doesn’t have tenure, but he’s not in line for a tenure decision.

They have kept this jerk on for many years, and obviously approved of his dissident teachings. He just made the mistake of going too far this time, and the College knew they’d be in trouble from the bishop if they gave him still another year of teaching heresies to their students.

BC still is a mess. They have only let troublemakers go over the years when things got too hot to handle.

Notice that “several” students are objecting. What’s that? Two? Three? The students are probably more faithful than most of the faculty, although the faculty are working on fixing that.

Not that I wish anything bad for Father Hesbergh, but after he dies they should hand his body over to the Russians and put his body next to Lenin.

You have it. Most Catholics don’t know it, but the reason why Protestants have no trouble with women preachers is that they are all laity. It was mere social convention that prevented them from ever doing it, that an some comments by Paul. But we have been a hierarchical church since the beginning. If Jesus is the new Moses and the new Aaron. The big difference between the levitical priesthood and the priesthood of Jesus being it is not hereditary, but appointive. Except for the Anglo-Catholics in the Episcopal Church, all this smacks of priest-craft and usurpation. But history seems to bear us out. Which is why the gnostics-freaks are trying to re-write that history, so that Christian history is made to seem like that Sunni-=Schia split.

Well, by golly.

Dare we hope that Boston College may one day become Catholic again?

B.C. had some attractive coeds for a NE college -which really isn’t saying much.
