Cher refuses to back down from anti-Mormon slur
KTVX-TV ^ | July 2, 2012 | Dan Metcalf Jr.

Cher is refusing to back down from a Twitter comment she posted on Friday that is considered a slur against members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The pop singer and passionate Democrat sent out the tweet urging President Barack Obama and his aides to get organized or risk losing November's election to Republican Romney, who is a Mormon.

Cher's tweet said: "I Feel if he (Obama) doesn't get all his DUCKS IN A ROW we'll b forced 2 listen 2Uncaring Richy Rich! The whitest man in MAGIC UNDERWEAR in the WH (White House)."

Some news agencies reported that LDS leaders were upset over the reference to the garment won by faithful adult members of the church to remind them of sacred temple ordinances.

ABC 4 called a representative for the Church who said no LDS leaders ever issued a response to the tweet, nor would they be expected to.

Several people claiming to be Mormons were upset with Cher for making the remark, and responded directly to Cher via Twitter. One person called her an "anti-Mormon bigot."

cher I Feel if he doesn't get all his DUCKS IN A ROW we'll b forced 2 listen 2Uncaring Richy Rich! The whitest man in MAGIC UNDERWEAR in the WH Jun 29th, 2012 at 9:24am

Referring to the garment as "magic" is considered a derogatory slur by many faithful members of the church.

Cher is not the first prominent figure to catch heat over a tweet about the garments.

In February during a GOP primary debate, New York Times columnist Charles Blow tweeted: "Let me just tell you this Mitt "Muddle Mouth": I'm a single parent and my kids are *amazing*! Stick that in your magic underwear."

Blow later apologized, saying, "Btw, the comment I made about Mormonism during Wed.'s debate was inappropriate, and I regret it. I'm willing to admit that with no caveats."

A Buzzfeed.com article described Mormon garments as "...a rough equivalent of Jews' yarmulkes or tzitzit."

Buzzfeed's article also noted:

"It's difficult to imagine a Times writer making a similar joke about a Jewish politician."

How terribly bigoted of you to disparage islam. My god how irrational your rants are.
Listen, you might have brilliant point if this thread were about islam, it’s not. If that’s what you want to talk about start your own thread.
There is not hatred of mormons on FR, there is nearly daily exposure of mormonISM.
If you are offended by that and apparently you are, explain what your are offended by.
What is posted on FR primarily in the Religion Forum about mormonISM are words of their leaders. THEIR leaders, not made up words THEIR words.
How you have apparently missed that is beyond is beyond me.
mormonISM by its very nature is anti-Christian. It is blasphemy. It is degrading of Jesus Christ.
How on earth does that not offend any thinking person is a mystery.
So one must surmise apparently that you know nothing of mormonISM but want to defend it anyway or you are a mormon and can’t defend it.

Logic is not a Mittbots strong suite. But have mercy, deep inside many are still Conservative so are very conflicted. That is why they like call folks Obama supporters is they don’t salivate on command at the mere mention of the word “Romney”...

I doubt it. The Jews have a covenant with God.

Even though they broke it? Or did God create 2 covenants - one for Jews and one for Christians?

“If people would make love to the Lord and charity toward the neighbor the principal of faith, doctrinal matters would then be only varieties of opinion. Truly Christian people would leave everyone to follow his or her conscience, and would say in their hearts that a person is truly a Christian when she or he lives as the Lord teaches. Thus from all the differing churches there would be made one church; and all the dissensions that come forth from doctrine alone would vanish; yea, all hatreds of one against another would be dissipated in a moment, and the Lord’s kingdom would come upon the earth.”

God made an unconditional covenant that depends only on His faithfulness for fulfillment.

Hollywood says Mitts a liar.

1. "I was a SEVERELY conservative governor of MA" - Mitt Romney - January 2012 - CPAC
2. "I have always been Pro-Life" - Mitt Romney - January 2012 - CPAC

ANd there are plenty more where that came from, Mitt Romney.

Add in the bearing of false witness against his neighbor by Mitt against the actual conservatives in the Primary race, Newt and Rick, and the proof of Mitt Romney being a liar is complete.

This time Hollywood was right, Mitt Romney is a Liar!

Mormonism is an anti-Christian cult. It’s teachings, practices and traditions are utterly contrary to the Word of God that Emanuel Swedenborg knew.

“Who is a good option to support as an alternative to Obama?”

There isn’t one. It’s Obama or Obama(R). That’s the irony of your desperate support for Mittens. It means absolutely nothing. But on the upside, if Obama(D) wins, he only gets 4 more years. That would be a better result, as with every outrage and tragedy the country and the GOP will become more conservative, and the blowback will be that much greater.

Rewarding Mittens and the GOPe will only insure 8 to 16 years of their rule, and a guaranteed destruction of the country.

You and the GOP would have us believe this is just about getting rid of one guy. In reality, this fight is so much bigger than Obama(D). It’s the ideology behind him that infects both the Pubs and Rats that must be utterly obliterated. If it isn’t, there will never be any hope of a reformed, strong America. We will only continue to get screwed by thieves, liars and anti-American fiends of various stripes. If a miracle doesn’t happen to stop Mittens getting the nomination, then the future looks bleak. Being ruled by either a Muslim cultist or a Mormon cultist is definitely a sign that God is moving us out of the way. And they will RULE. Neither of them understand or respect constitutional restraints.

Well, one area Swedenborg would agree is the Mormon teaching of repentance for the remission of sin. Humility before the Lord is another. I believe these are essentials for eternal life, not particulars of doctrine.

I've quietly lurked and watched how the Mormon faith has been attacked here and reflected on attacks to my own faith here years ago. The level of hatred reminds me of Hitler and the Jews and is hardly Christian.

There are a few (only a handful, thank God) of Freepers here (more than likely, bitter, "Paul Bots") who ALMOST DAILY (due to their IRRATIONAL hatred of Mormons, though NOT ONE can verbalize their reasons therefore, other than some massacre which happened 155 years ago) demonize, insult, disrespect and otherwise, attack Mormonism.

You must FAIL to read things directly from MORMON sources that we post.

Why is that???

Questions put to Joseph Smith: "'Do you believe the Bible?' [Smith:]'If we do, we are the only people under heaven that does, for there are none of the religious sects of the day that do'. When asked 'Will everybody be damned, but Mormons'? [Smith replied] 'Yes, and a great portion of them, unless they repent, and work righteousness." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 119).
Joseph Smith: "for the teachers of religion of the different sects understood the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible" (from Pearl of Great Price 1:12). "What is it that inspires professors of Christianity generally with a hope of salvation? It is that smooth, sophisticated influence of the devil, by which he deceives the whole world" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p.270).

Brigham Young stated this repeatedly: "When the light came to me I saw that all the so-called Christian world was grovelling in darkness" (Journal of Discourses 5:73); "The Christian world, so-called, are heathens as to the knowledge of the salvation of God" (Journal of Discourses 8:171); "With a regard to true theology, a more ignorant people never lived than the present so-called Christian world" (Journal of Discourses 8:199); "And who is there that acknowledges [God's] hand? ...You may wander east, west, north, and south, and you cannot find it in any church or government on the earth, except the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" (Journal of Discourses , vol. 6, p.24); "Should you ask why we differ from other Christians, as they are called, it is simply because they are not Christians as the New Testament defines Christianity" (Journal of Discourses 10:230).

Orson Pratt proclaimed: "Both Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the 'whore of Babylon' whom the Lord denounces by the mouth of John the Revelator as having corrupted all the earth by their fornications and wickedness. Any person who shall be so corrupt as to receive a holy ordinance of the Gospel from the ministers of any of these apostate churches will be sent down to hell with them, unless they repent" (The Seer, p. 255).

Orson Pratt also said: "This great apostasy commenced about the close of the first century of the Christian era, and it has been waxing worse and worse from then until now" (Journal of Discourses
, vol.18, p.44) and: "But as there has been no Christian Church on the earth for a great many centuries past, until the present century, the people have lost sight of the pattern that God has given according to which the Christian Church should be established, and they have denominated a great variety of people Christian Churches, because they profess to be ...But there has been a long apostasy, during which the nations have been cursed with apostate churches in great abundance" (Journal of Discourses , 18:172).

President John Taylor stated: "Christianity...is a perfect pack of nonsense...the devil could not invent a better engine to spread his work than the Christianity of the nineteenth century." (Journal of Discourses , vol. 6, p.167); "Where shall we look for the true order or authority of God? It cannot be found in any nation of Christendom." (Journal of Discourses , 10:127).

James Talmage said: "A self-suggesting interpretation of history indicates that there has been a great departure from the way of salvation as laid down by the Savior, a universal apostasy from the Church of Christ". (A Study of the Articles of Faith, p.182).

President Joseph Fielding Smith said: "Doctrines were corrupted, authority lost, and a false order of religion took the place of the gospel of Jesus Christ, just as it had been the case in former dispensations, and the people were left in spiritual darkness." (Doctrines of Salvation, p.266). "For hundreds of years the world was wrapped in a veil of spiritual darkness, until there was not one fundamental truth belonging to the place of salvation ...Joseph Smith declared that in the year 1820 the Lord revealed to him that all the 'Christian' churches were in error, teaching for commandments the doctrines of men" (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 3, p.282).

More recent statements by apostle Bruce McConkie are also very clear: "Apostasy was universal...And this darkness still prevails except among those who have come to a knowledge of the restored gospel" (Doctrines of Salvation, vol 3, p.265); "Thus the signs of the times include the prevailing apostate darkness in the sects of Christendom and in the religious world in general" (The Millennial Messiah, p.403); "a perverted Christianity holds sway among the so-called Christians of apostate Christendom" (Mormon Doctrine, p.132); "virtually all the millions of apostate Christendom have abased themselves before the mythical throne of a mythical Christ whom they vainly suppose to be a spirit essence who is incorporeal uncreated, immaterial and three-in-one with the Father and Holy Spirit" (Mormon Doctrine, p.269); "Gnosticism is one of the great pagan philosophies which antedated Christ and the Christian Era and which was later commingled with pure Christianity to form the apostate religion that has prevailed in the world since the early days of that era." (Mormon Doctrine, p.316).

President George Q. Cannon said: "After the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized, there were only two churches upon the earth. They were known respectively as the Church of the Lamb of God and Babylon. The various organizations which are called churches throughout Christendom, though differing in their creeds and organizations, have one common origin. They all belong to Babylon" (Gospel Truth, p.324).

President Wilford Woodruff stated: "the Gospel of modern Christendom shuts up the Lord, and stops all communication with Him. I want nothing to do with such a Gospel, I would rather prefer the Gospel of the dark ages, so called" (Journal of Discourses , vol. 2, p.196).

In my experience over the years, I have had a lot of dealings with Mormons. I have found them to be, for the most part, honest, hardworking, patriotic, generous to a fault, clean living, and strong supporters of the family.

Why can't you say anything good about the THEOLOGY of MORMONism?

Your above statement could be said about MUSLIMs; too.

Or Hindus; or Buddhaists, or even Scientologists.

Whatever your faith is, it is likely worthy of attack. Mormonism does not believe in repentance and the remission of sins, at least in the way Christianity does. It is a work based religion that focuses on outward appearance and ritual for the salvation of souls, while denying the character, divinity, and work of Christ. They themselves deny the doctrines of Christianity, maintaining it is the whore of Babylon, and that all authority and true baptism and hope is retained by the Mormons. Albeit, they believe that Hitler and non-Mormons simply go to lower heavens, whereas the good temple Mormon becomes a god, much like God the father allegedly was a perfect Mormon on some distance planet, who ascended into heaven. This is anathema; a great and terrible deception, and Mormonism itself is based on one deception after another. And not even sophisticated deceptions. The beliefs of Mormonism are so utterly absurd it is mysterious how they continue to live so long. They were to Christianity then what Scientology is to Christianity today.

To compare these simple truths to Jew-hate and Hitlerism is simply irrational, unless you yourself are a deceived Mormon who likens himself to a Jew in a concentration camp when he logs on to Free Republic! Your real controversy is with the words of the Bible, which directly condemn Mormonism and other cults who preach an alien gospel.

Gal 1:6-9 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: (7) Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. (8) But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. (9) As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

Seriously, comparing posters who expose momronISM to nazism is disgusting on your part.

mormonISM at its base is anti-Christian. I would suggest you actually learn about momornISM before you defend it.

lds require working for salvation, as the lds jesus is not sufficient - just a heads up.
