During its annual fall meeting, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops will discuss whether to approve a document entitled “Preaching the Mystery of Faith: The Sunday Homily.”
“The ultimate goal of proclaiming the Gospel is to lead people into a loving and intimate relationship with the Lord, a relationship that forms the character of their persons and guides them in living out their faith,” states the draft document, which was prepared by a committee chaired by Archbishop Robert Carlson of St. Louis. “The homilist should strive to live a life of holiness” and “see the world through biblical eyes.”

This has nothing to do with this thread but could someone who is a Catholic explain to me why your Pope is preaching in arabic?
I am just not getting that.
One of our deacons has just come out with 2 great sermons (at each of the 3 Sunday Masses for 2 weeks, that makes 6 times) on why Catholics consider Marriage Sacred and this is why we are against fornication, contraception, pornography, homosexuality, adultery divorce/remarriage.
I sent him a fan email, asked for a copy of the homily, and email-blasted it to everybody in the parish.

(*May speak Pashtun, Syriac or Tagalog at home, but their prayer-language is Arabic, anyway)

I just did not know the reason, makes sense though, don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it.
My brother travels around the world preaching/teaching/planting (mostly South Africa, Indonesia, and formerly East Germany) he just works with the local churches and the pastor translates.
So it would make sense if he knew the languages to use them.
Whoa... while your explanation about the Pope preaching in Arabic was spot-on, you messed this up entirely.
First, very few people within the Church would assert that "Vatican II was wrong". Misinterpreted? Certainly. Overreaching and lacking prudence? Possibly. "Wrong"? Only a small few, like the SSPX, who are in irregular communion with the Church, if at all.
Nobody is advocating that "all related preaching" should be in Latin. Even the hard-core traditionalists preach in vernacular, and will re-read the Epistle and Gospel in the vernacular after they have been read in Latin (when they don't, people have the text in their hand missals anyways).
The traditionalists weren't the ones who "rewrote the liturgy" -- the traditionalists would be content to dump the post-Vatican II Missal entirely. The new translation was at the hands of a group of priests and bishops from various Anglophone countries, following the directions of the 2001 instruction Liturgiam Authenticam.
The "new translation" of the Missal is hardly the "jumbled mess of Middle English and Latin" that you claim... most people have adjusted perfectly fine.
By comparison, people claimed to understand the old translation... but all they understood was a paraphrase, which in many cases bore little similarity with the Latin original.
Why don’t the U. S. Bishops just go back to the original GIRM on the Vatican site?

And get rid of the altar girls. The only thing mentioned in the GIRM is acolytes!

Why shouldn't he preach in the native language spoken by Christians throughout the Near East? I am just not getting why that is a problem.

I remain convinced this is one of the things holding back vocations to the priesthood.
In addition to getting rid of altar girls, the Bishops need to be faithful to Ministeria Quaedam by instituting adult men as Lectors and Acolytes. At present, only those preparing for diaconate and/or priesthood are instituted -- in direct opposition to Paul VI's intention of opening these ministries to laymen in general.

For most of our clerics, speaking multiple languages is a requirement of the vocation. This has less visibility in these United States than elsewhere; much more visibility in the third world and among the Vatican bureaucracy. Your brother would do well to learn as much as possible the language of the people to whom he ministers (if he doesn't already).
