Smith viewed capturing the presidency as part of the mission of the church.

51–57, Emma Smith is counseled (commanded) to be faithful and true; 58–66, Laws governing the plurality of wives are set forth.

As far as the effects on this site, the Mormons a left primarily ranting amongst themselves. we claim at leas 3-5 souls saved and many more given pause and starting to question. I know of no Mormon converts on FR who joined because of their activities.
If the truth diminished FreeRepublic then the site would be as worthless as the DU. Since FR stands for the truth its dissenters have also gone off to sulk among themselves on a myriad of other ranting forums.
Obviously FR has some value to you, you are still here...
BTW I just want to say Hi Greg, cool rant buddy. But why does my name not have a hyperlink on your little enemies list. Is it done by quantity of posts?

ah, No Smith was shot while trying to break out of jail, after guns were smuggled to him and he killed two guards.
You do know why Smith was in jail - right?
polygamy, destruction of private property, burning down newspapers, bank fraud, adultery, polygamy, pedophilia, rapes, thievery, cons, delinquent debt.....treason.

Because the Mormons were such good friends to the Nazis and sympathetic with them against the Jews, the Mormons were the only rteligious group allowed to stay and prosylize in the 30s and 40s...
the Christians w2re persecuted ort arrested or deported...
