He's not with Liberation Theology, he's with Communone e Liberazione, a conservative Church group I used to enjoy beer & pizza with 25 years ago (they had a branch in DC). The founders of C+L were Cathlic students at the University of Milan who regular got beat up by the Marxist student groups. They survived a lot and are reliably anticommunist.

This guy Francis I sounds like a really, really good choice.

I hung out with them for a little while in New Haven, CT (early '90s). One of them Allessandro Ghidini was in Yale Med School ... OB/GYN. He was the only one who refused to do abortions in internship, earning him the ire of his classmates, as that meant they had to do more.

By the way, when you hang out with an Italian social/religious/political group, you eat well.
