The son of an Italian immigrant railway worker, when made a cardinal in 2001, appealed to fellow Argentines to forgo flying to Rome to celebrate his elevation. He asked them to donate the plane fare to the poor instead.

I like it that Pope Francis starts with a perfect expression of how we should care for the poor - through voluntary charity. Too many clerics prefer to do it in an unChristian way - steal from some at gunpoint, subtract a fat “cut” to further goobermint power, and dribble out cultural dependency.
Sounds like the cardinals made a good choice.
