I have an idea, why doesn’t he just read the story for himself, its all there. Is he afraid to pick up a Bible, one has to conclude that. You're assuming he's looking for answers. But he's looking to debate and shame Christians.

Unless, he is different than atheists I know, he is looking for answers.
He desperately wants to know if he matters, but is terrified to find out, so they cover this search/pain/whatever you want to call it with a shell saying “that there is no God”, all the time searching for the answer “there is”.
