COLUMBUS, May 14, 2013 (LifeSiteNews) – The Central Ohio Association of Catholic Educators (COACE) is backing the diocese in its decision to fire a homosexual teacher, according to a letter sent to the teacher.

Gym instructor Carla Hale, 57, was fired from her job at Bishop Watterson Catholic High School last month after an anonymous parent wrote to the Diocese of Columbus to complain that in an obituary for Hale’s mother, Hale was listed as a surviving family member together with her longtime lesbian partner, Julie.

Not to worry.

Plenty of other places to work.

MSM, White House, Congress, NBA, NFL, AFL, San Francisco (any job, any time)....etc...etc.

Hale is still pursuing legal redress through the City of Columbus, which has an ordinance barring employers from discriminating based on sexual preference. The law makes no exception for religious organizations or other employers who object to homosexuality on religious grounds. A guilty verdict carries penalties of up to 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Well the Ohio Constitution does not make any exceptions to the right of people to exercise their religious convictions.

The Ohio Bill of Rights.

§ 1.07Rights of conscience; education; the necessity of religion and knowledge (1851)

All men have a natural and indefeasible right to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own conscience.

No person shall be compelled to attend, erect, or support any place of worship, or maintain any form of worship, against his consent; and no preference shall be given, by law, to any religious society; nor shall any interference with the rights of conscience be permitted.

No religious test shall be required, as a qualification for office, nor shall any person be incompetent to be a witness on account of his religious belief; but nothing herein shall be construed to dispense with oaths and affirmations.

Religion, morality, and knowledge, however, being essential to good government, it shall be the duty of the general assembly to pass suitable laws to protect every religious denomination in the peaceable enjoyment of its own mode of public worship, and to encourage schools and the means of instruction.

Never read an obituary where the “lifestyle” of an surviving child was mentioned.

Since obituaries are usually written by family members , did she intentionally ‘out” herself?

If so, no sympathy from me for her.

Private matters should remain private.

I read the court’s decision and I do not see where the decision trumps the Ohio constitution. The court ruled in favor of the church.

Those who support homosexuals are against our Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ.
These anti Christ people only bring destruction on us ALL.
I have NO sympathy for homosexuals!

Homosexuality is a "Mark" of disobedience.
Someone once asked The answer is in the definition of "REPROBATE". And the reason"why" is given in the Bible.

God has a cure for homosexuals.

Yes, she likely was the one who wrote it. Only she, her brother from KY, and grandchildren are listed as surviving members of the family. She lived in Powell, OH either near or with her mother. So it seems that she, at the very least, gave permission for the inclusion of the lesbian partner. She outed herself.

Yep, she forced the hand of her employer. It is her own fault.

Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. E.E.O.C.

The court ruled in favor of the church.

Indeed they did just as they will in this case if they grant cert.

The lesbian is going to lose regardless of whether or not Ohio thinks state law trumps the First Amendment.

The lesbian is going to lose regardless of whether or not Ohio thinks state law trumps the First Amendment.

First of all the courts decision hinged on the fact that the teacher was also a minister which this woman clearly is not so the case does not necessarily have an important bearing on the case.

Second she is seeking redress through a Columbus city ordinance so this will be going first to a city court and then the state courts so Ohio’s constitution will be the first line of defense for the church.

Thanks for posting link, and you are right...I had a similar experience where the "surviving child" did not list their partner in the parent's obituary notice, for whatever reasons, although I could tell it was a difficult decision for them.

If this woman felt the need to include her same-sex "spouse", then she's responsible for the consequences, and there's really no question it's a direct conflict with her employment requirements.

One thing I was curious about...3 of the grandchildren are named "Hale" (the teacher's name)...only one named "Roe" (the brother's/family name) and one other one with a completely different name...

NOT that it matters, of course! and I applaud the Catholic Teachers' Union for standing up for their principles! Rules are rules, and there's no discrimination involved here, only someone wanting an exception to the rules.

To me, that indicated that one grandchild got married and she uses her new married name. The spouse's name was listed in parentheses.
