That's what the sentence says. Catholics can't "get out of" something unless they're already in it.

Are you familiar with this sort of usage?

• "You can get out of going to remedial classes if you pass the test next week."

• "You can get out of doing dishes if we all use paper plates."

• "You can get out of explaining anything if you just pile it all on higher and deeper."

I think most of us understand how this works.
