>>Gross’s book is about as credible as Bill Ayer’s Dreams from my Father.<<

I’m sorry, the sad truth is that Poles hated Jews just as much as the Germans did.

Not just the Poles. In the Balkans, Ukraine & Belarus, local groups often acted as auxiliaries to the SS, rounding up Jews to be murdered or taking it upon themselves to do the killing. The Nazis found plenty of help in perpetuating the holocaust.

Did I deny the existence of antisemitism among Poles? The flaming headline of this thread was not about Poles but about Catholics.

Even Gross does not reduce the pogrom to Catholicism. But FR and Drudge do.

If the post had sought to raise questions for Polish national memory, which is what Gross’s book did, I’d have no problem.

Something terrible happened that day. Polish soul-searching is appropriate.

But even Gross does not claim that he knows exactly what happened and Gross explicitly denies that he claims to have written a historical account. And Gross’s account is disputed, by (notoriously anti-semitic) National Holocaust Nuseum historians. Notoriously anti-semitic journals pointed out problems in his work.

But leave it to FR to reduce even Gross’s laudable question-raising to sheer, naked Catholic-bashing.

But then, FR is a notoriously anti-Catholic site.

I will never return to it.
