Fox News columnist rips Pope Francis, loses Catholic News Service gig
Adam Shaw, an editor for the Fox News website, has been taking a lot of heat, even from some conservatives, for a rip-roaring assessment of the popes recent apostolic exhortation. His column is titled: Pope Francis is the Catholic Churchs Obama God help us, which gives you a sense of where Shaw was coming from.
But if Shaws Fox job is safe hey, when Rush Limbaugh is blasting the pontiff anyone else looks tame his other gig, as a film and video game reviewer for Catholic News Service, is over as of yesterday.
Tony Spence, editor in chief of the wire service, which operates under the aegis of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said he had been very pleased with Shaws work, which included an analysis of the comics book industry. Spence said he knew that Shaw worked for Fox but it never caused a conflict until this week. Spence wrote in an email:
(W)hen he penned the recent piece on Pope Francis, comparing him to President Obama, and presenting it as an op/ed, he seriously compromised his credibility as an objective Catholic journalist for CNS. Had Adam merely reported on the popes apostolic exhortation, even citing unflattering sources, there would have been no problem. However, Adams caustic condemnation of the exhortation and of Francis himself, one of the key figures we cover daily with objectivity, fairness and certainly charity, left me little choice but to end his service with us.
Spence wished Shaw well at FoxNews.com and in all his future endeavors.
Rough language, definitely, but I thought it a fair figurative description of much of modern jounalism when I first read it. And then soon after that, Marty Bashir opened his mouth and showed it wasn’t always figurative.
The real quote. And 100% on the money.
Sometimes negative news does come out, but it is often exaggerated and manipulated to spread scandal. Journalists sometimes risk becoming ill from coprophilia and thus fomenting coprophagia: which is a sin that taints all men and women, that is, the tendency to focus on the negative rather than the positive aspects.
The quote, by the way, is authentic. It comes from an interview on 24 February 2012 (on the occasion of the Consistory for the creation of new cardinals earlier that month) reported by the Italian journalist and veteran Vaticanista Andrea Tornielli, and it was published here.
>>The real quote. And 100% on the money.<<
I recommend you and Paul Woodward pick up Greek and Latin dictionaries and get schooled. Hopefully, Pope Francis is suffering the same problems.
Love a Pope who is blunt.
It also leaves a bad aftertaste in the mouth.
>>Love a Pope who is blunt.<<
Do you also love Martin Bashir? He’s blunt and also has a filthy mouth.
I know two things. One, the Pope was chosen to make decisions. Two, I'm not the Pope.
Really?
We hold the Jewish people in special regard because their covenant with God has never been revoked, for the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable (Rom 11:29). The Church, which shares with Jews an important part of the Sacred Scriptures, looks upon the people of the covenant and their faith as one of the sacred roots of her own Christian identity (cf. Rom 11:16-18). As Christians, we cannot consider Judaism as a foreign religion; nor do we include the Jews among those called to turn from idols and to serve the true God (cf. 1 Thes 1:9). With them, we believe in the one God[1] who acts in history, and with them we accept his revealed word.[2]
Is it factually incorrect to claim the Jews do not worship an idol?
Did Jesus stoop down and speak just as “bluntly” with flighty language as Archbishop Bergoglio has?
You couldn't be more wrong. The pope's an incredibly powerful man in the world. There is absolutely no room for giving him a "pass" when he doles out terribly ignorant and misguided political statements that threaten to doom more people to poverty. If his knowledge is narrow, how can he be educated if no one tells him where he's going wrong? Shutting up and ignoring it doesn't help anybody.
I read the Fox News piece a week or two ago and it was spot on the money. Praise the writer for having the courage to speak truth to power. And shame on the church for saying the guy isn't allowed to even be a movie critic for them without sycophantically accepting everything the church's leaders say like a good little obedient sheep.
It is factually correct that Jews do not worship the Blessed Trinity, the Triune God: ask them for yourself. Now as far as idols, what’s the difference between them and false gods, if any?
“flightly” = “filthy”
And Judas was chosen by Jesus Christ to make decisions; and Judas made a wrong decision.
Who cares whether the writer of the piece is Catholic or not? Attacking the messenger is a classic logical fallacy that lets you avoid addressing the merits of the writer’s arguments.
Unless you’re card-carrying member of the “my church, right or wrong” Catholic FR brigade.
The point is that before the Incarnation, it was not revealed to humanity that God truly is Triune. Therefore, before the Christ, the Jews did indeed worship the one true God and therefore, not an idol.
Now, those who remain Jews and reject Christ are one matter. For such people, we can only pray. However, it is also said by many (even many non-Jews) that the Jewish people are Jewish not only because of their religion, but also because of their heritage.
That is, they are a chosen people. The first chosen people. Chosen by God. Those who remain in the religion we can only hope do so out of invincible ignorance, after the Gospel has been offered, but beyond that it’s simply fact: the Jews are chosen by God. As a people. Meaning, a race of people.
It is in this context that, I’m sure, the Holy Father is speaking. The God they worship hasn’t changed. The only thing that has changed is our (meaning Man’s) understanding of who or what God is. (We understand a tiny bit more than before Jesus came on the scene)
But the same God is worshiped by both Christians and Jews. To say otherwise is akin to saying, “We know everything about God”, which is blasphemous.
That is not true. Check out the traditional Good Friday prayer for the Jews.
