Pope Francis is shunning bulletproof vehicles during his trip to the Middle East this month, insisting that he use a normal car and be allowed to be as close to people as possible, the Vatican said on Thursday.

The Vatican, briefing reporters on the trip, also confirmed that a rabbi and an Islamic leader will accompany Pope Francis on his trip to the Middle East in a gesture of the importance he attaches to inter-religious dialogue.

Oh don’t think I haven’t thought of martyrdom. But I was thinking of it in a much more cynical way. You see, Francis could then be canonized along with Paul VI.

Thinking of Reagan being shot.

I guess when Pope Francis is ready to go, he is ready to go.

A small correction. Saint John Paul II never did die, he did survived.

Yes. I said Almost. I understand the Islamicist shooter failed to murder JP2. That’s why I said Almost. He was rather badly hurt, we were told.

Scanning through the thread again, I think I'm liking the bomb proof car plus chain-mail worn around the neck area combo.

You must have missed the “almost” in the original post.

“...I was thinking of it on a much more cynical way”

“cynical”: (Webster) “sarcastic, sneering”.

Yep...it fits.

For what, willful stupidity? And selfishness (for heedlessly intensifying the physical risks for those responsible for his security)?

It’s always puzzled me how some people can claim others are not Christians when they call themselves that. Maybe some are better ones than others, but let God sort it out. It’s not for us to say.

Good words to live by.

I will say a prayer for Pope Francis.
Not much else to be done, is there?

Personally, I think His Holiness needs to ride around in a MRAP like we used in Afghanistan to protect our troops from landmines and IEDs.
