One of Brazil's top Catholic bishops has spoken out in favor of legal unions for homosexual couples, an apparent shift in the Church's stance on the country's existing gay-marriage policy.
"There needs to be a dialog on the rights attached to shared life between people of the same sex who decide to live together. They need legal support from society," Leonardo Steiner, the secretary general of the National Confederation of Brazilian Bishops, said in an interview with O Globo newspaper published on its website Thursday.
Brazil, home to the world's largest Catholic population, has allowed gay marriage since May 2013, when a court ruled clerks could not reject marriage applications from same-sex couples.
At the time Brazil's bishops opposed the decision, but Steiner said the Church was constantly evolving.
"The Church isn't the same through the ages. It seeks answers for the present time, using the Gospel as the illuminating force of its action," the bishop said.
"The Church is always seeking to read the signs of the times, to see what must or must not change. The truths of faith don't change."

Well Bishop, how politically correct of you!
A sign of the times I guess. If I’m not mistaken, Scripture tells us that in the last days many will fall away from the faith.
He needs to get the frock outta here. These boy buggering, so-called priests need to go. They are of Satan, not God.
This is no shift on the “gay marriage” policy, if we’re talking only about “civil unions,” which are legal structures that give people certain automatic legal, tax and property rights.
The problem is that the gays really don’t care about that, because what the gay movement wants to do is not to let gays live together with certain official household rights, but to claim that they’re “married” and to force this upon the Church. I think even the dread and liberal Bishop Steiner will draw the line there.
However, he won’t be able to avoid it. There was an article last week about a country (England?) where “civil unions” have been legal for sometime and where the leftist government has introduced a bill, at the instigation of the gays, to automatically convert them all to “marriages” and declare all people in them to be married to each other. This is being opposed by the Catholic bishops and, surprisingly enough, even by some gays who were in these civil unions for property benefits but knew perfectly well that they weren’t marriages and did not want to consider themselves “married” to the other party.
Must be a Bishop from Campinas. . .
Un-Bishop and excommunicate him.
“You’re fired.”
What is Campinas? Is it the Castro district of Brazil or something?
Before we get too upset about this, remember that Catholic bishops in America wine and dine with Democrat politicians who support and fund abortion.
Signals from the Pope?
The Church isn’t the same through the ages. It seeks answers for the present time, using the Gospel as the illuminating force of its action,” the bishop said.
“The Church is always seeking to read the signs of the times, to see what must or must not change. The truths of faith don’t change.”
lie. The word never changes to fit the desires of sinners. Obviously this bishop is a heretic.
He said a mouth full.
In Brazil?
Just doing his part to sweep away those archaic taboos which render the Church so inconveniently out of step with the world. /s
“I hope that the Italian Church can talk about any topic at all, about married priests, the Eucharist for the divorced, homosexuality, without taboos.” - Bp. Nunzio Galantino, whom Pope Francis appointed as General Secretary to the Italian Bishops Conference.
Better excommunicate this jerk or it will spread to the whole church...ask an Anglican.
Campinas is a mini San Francisco outside of Sao Paulo... and don’t ask how I know.... ;)
“The Church isnt the same through the ages. It seeks answers for the present time, using the Gospel as the illuminating force of its action, the bishop said”.
Time for this liberal bishop to be taken behind the wood shed. The Church never changes in matters of morals and faith, because the Word of God never changes.
I saw a great interview last night on The World Over on EWTN. Raymond Arroyo interviewed Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, the Archbishop of Manila. He is also one of the cardinals that will be leading the Conference on the Family in Rome during October. Raymond Arroyo specifically asked him about divorced Catholics receiving communion without benefit of an annulment. He was also asked about Kaspar. The Cardinal said NOTHING will change in Catholic doctrine because God’s Word never changes. He goes on to say that the annulment process will be talked about. But annulments are not going away and divorced Catholics without an annulment will not be receiving communion.
Pay no attention to this Brazilian bishop. Homosexual unions will never be condoned by the Catholic Church. After this character is called on the carpet he’ll be singing a different song.
