I'm Gay, but I'm Not Switching to a Church That Supports Gay Marriage
The Atlantic ^ | May 30, 2013 | Eve Tushnet

When I became Catholic in 1998, as a college sophomore, I didn't know any other gay Christians. I'd been raised in a kind of pointillist Reform Judaism...

This sheltered upbringing may help explain my sunny undergraduate confidence that even though I knew of literally nobody else who had ever tried to be both unashamedly gay and obediently Catholic, I was totally going to do it. No problem, guys, I got this.

[snip]

[M]any Christian churches are beginning to integrate gay marriage into their theology... With so many more options for gay Christians, why [not] just de-pope myself?

It's that I fell in love with the Catholic Church....I didn't switch from atheistic post-Judaism to "belief in God," but to Catholicism: the Incarnation and the Crucifixion...her insistence that seemingly irreconcilable needs could both be met in God's overwhelming love: justice and mercy, reason and mystery, a savior who is fully God and also fully human. I didn't expect to understand every element of the faith. It is a lot bigger than I am.

[snip]

At the time of my baptism...I figured, everybody has to sacrifice something. God doesn't promise that He'll only ask you for the sacrifices you agree with and understand.

[snip]

Right now, the Biblical witness seems pretty clear. Both opposite-sex and same-sex love are used, in the Bible, as images of God's love. The opposite-sex love is found in marriage—sexually exclusive marriage, an image which recurs not only in the Song of Songs but in the prophets and in the New Testament—and the same-sex love is friendship. Both of these forms of love are considered real and beautiful; neither is better than the other. But they're not interchangeable.

Moreover, Genesis names sexual difference as the only difference which was present in Eden...

“if they are seeking God, who am I to judge?”

The point is she's not seeking God, being unappolongeticly homosexual.

“Both opposite-sex and same-sex love are used, in the Bible, as images of God’s love.”

You didn’t even read the article, or the excerpt, before damning people to Hell, did you?

same-sex love = FRIENDSHIP. One man laying his life down for another, etc.

Is that your thing? Judging the crap out of people on a whim?

Romans 1:25-17, since that passage is rarely mentioned in conjunction with so-called “Christian” homosexuals.

I'm (also) attracted to women who are not my wife. Statement of fact. Does this mean I am also not seeking God?

Do you tell everyone you are an adulterer? Do you identify yourself as an adulterer?

Asking people who they are is always revealing. Some will say they are their job. Some will say I am ________ son or daughter. Sadly most of us (me included) don’t identify us first as a follower of Christ.

Well I read the article (twice) and not once did she chastise the actual sin of homosexuality!!!

She just said acting upon it was bad (sodomy), and wrong against the church. Not once did she mention God’s Law against lustful sin and the profession that sin is actually good!

She’s absolutely flat-out deceitful. We don’t need “in-the-closet” celibate gays to continue to shout, “I was born this way and that’s OK”. Miss Tushnet’s professing her colors without shame and expects a gold star and special treatment for her so-called celibacy. These kinds of acts are what’s tearing down the very core of our Biblical Faith!!!

GOSHDARNIT, TBPIPER!!

YOU DIDN'T READ THE ARTICLE! The point is, she is not "unapologetically homosexual," she's anti-gay-marriage, and does not at any point imply that sodomy could be part of Christian friendship!

She's single, chaste, and abstinent. Without evidence, you've judged her otherwise. I hope you're properly abashed.

Now go back and read the article.

The difference is that she is happy in her homosexuality. Are you happy in any of your sins? If you are then you are not truly seeking God. Lookup some scriptures on being double minded.

OK, I "get" the Scripture. I love the Scripture.

Did you "get" Eve Tushnet? Did you get that she's single, haste, and abstinent, for Christ's sake?

I’m not a Catholic because there are certain Catholic teachings I don’t agree with. When I realized that, it never occurred to me to try to change the Church. All it meant was that I wasn’t Catholic. And, I’ve never had a “problem” with real Catholics, some of whom are far more spiritually advanced than I’ll ever be without some serous divine intervention.

But “cafeteria Catholics” turn my stomach. What they are is not “Catholic” - it’s moral cowardice and hypocrisy. And unfailingly it shows in other areas of their lives as well.

In the end, a person’s REAL religion is how they live their life. People who think they can bullshit God are the most deluded of all.

Some people in society seem to think only on the natural (sex) level. They have no comprehension of the supernatural (spiritual) level of lives.

God bless you.

She's not unashamedly gay. She's unashamedly chaste.

Do you have a problem with that?

PeterPrinciple: She spends the whole, entire article identifying herself as a follower of Christ.

She also identifies herself as a sinner. So do I--- and right out loud --- every time I go to Mass.

"Asking people who they are is always revealing. Some will say they are their job. Some will say I am ________ son or daughter. Sadly most of us (me included) don’t identify us first as a follower of Christ."

I notice you identify yourself as a GOP party animal. Would I be justified in thinking that means you're not a follower of Christ? No, I don't think I should make that kind of judgment. I suspect you don't, either, my FRiend.

Without evidence, you've judged her otherwise.

Really? She said of herself

"I knew of literally nobody else who had ever tried to be both unashamedly gay and obediently Catholic

We are to be sanctified and conformed to the image of Christ. What part of "unashamedly gay" fits the image of Christ? It is part of the old life not the new. It has to be nailed to the cross like all of our sins.
