Egypt was the bread basket for the world during this time.

I thought it was Carthage, which is why the Punic Wars were central to the success of the Roman Republic, and later the Empire.

North Africa had a lot of grain, but they consumed a lot also.
For the late Republic, control of Egypt was the only way to keep Rome fed.
