Egypt was the bread basket for the world during this time.I thought it was Carthage, which is why the Punic Wars were central to the success of the Roman Republic, and later the Empire.

North Africa had a lot of grain, but they consumed a lot also.
For the late Republic, control of Egypt was the only way to keep Rome fed.
