I have never before heard an objection to the term "lay person": it is applied to me (I apply it to myself!) and I do not find it objectionable. So, honest question: what is condescending about the term "lay person"?

It is a comparison to something of a lesser status. No one is of lesser status than clergy in the eyes of God.
