Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Goats show up in Scripture often. In God's initial Covenant with Abraham, the goat provides some the of sacrificial blood that seals the agreement. God consumes this sacrifice with fire, thus accepting it.

In Daniel's Vision, the Goat represents a conquering foreign power, most probably Greece.

Most interesting is the use of the Goat in the sacrificial system of the Tabernacle in the Wilderness. It is the practice that has given us a word in our language "scapegoat", which is exactly what it means. By the laying on of hands, the sins of the entire population were transferred to the goat, who was then set free. The irony is that, even in our own society, we often pile our sins onto someone else, but we DON'T set them free, which is the same as unforgiveness. The whole idea of "Substitutionary Atonement" is lost when we hold unforgiveness in our hearts.

In the last passage, Jesus separates His sheep from the goats. It is interesting that, to this day, the followers of the evil one display a GOAT as their logo.
