George Will: I Am a 'Low-Voltage Atheist'

In a wide-ranging interview, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer George Will discusses baseball, politics, and his status as an atheist.

"I'm an atheist. An agnostic is someone who is not sure. I'm pretty sure. I see no evidence of God," Will told Real Clear Religion.

"The basic question in life is not, 'Is there a God,' but 'Why does anything exist?' St. Thomas Aquinas said that there must be a first cause for everything, and we call the first cause 'God.' Fine, but it just has no hold on me.

"I majored in religion in college. I was very interested, but I just came to a different conclusion. I'm married to a fierce Presbyterian, and she raised our kids fierce Presbyterians.

"I'm an amiable, low-voltage atheist."

This is not the first time Will, a conservative who has written several books on politics and baseball, has made his views on religion public. In May, he told The Daily Caller that he was an atheist.

In the Real Clear Religion interview, Will was asked whether his atheistic views would preclude him from running for office as a conservative.

"It would be impossible for me to run for high office as a Republican," Will said. "Since I have no desire to run for office, it's a minor inconvenience! I think William F. Buckley put it well when he said that a conservative need not be religious, but he cannot despise religion.

"Russell Kirk never quite fathomed this, which is one of the reasons why I'm not a big fan of "The Conservative Mind." For him, conservatism without religion is meaningless."

As for the current state of religion in U.S. politics, Will said it is partly based on being politically correct.

I've noticed that a lot of atheists are the so-called intellectuals that think they know more anyone else, including God, and anyone that believes in God must be an inbred hick. That's how Will has always came across to me.

They also seem to repeat things if they are about themselves.

Does he feel any compulsion to be good? I mean ... if he could get away with theft or even murder — would he? What would stop him? Certainly there is no judgment, retribution, or moral standard that would condemn him. It’s just George and his personal whims, and whatever he can pull off in secret.

I always thought there was something missing with George Will.

And now I know.

All the wisdom I have (which isn't much) all points to God...and the more I study God the more I find that all wisdom points to Him.

George Will needs to check out his hairpiece...and get back to us (i.e. he's a fake).

Hey, don’t condemn all bow-ties because one idiot wears them.

I have a message for Will. High voltage or low voltage makes no difference. It’s the amperage that will kill you.

Maybe “georgewill” might work if you’re using keywords.

Either way, Will is just rehashing in September what he said back in May. It’s his doing, not any of ours.

King George III once commanded his advisers to investigate the matter and then come back with proof that God existed. After reviewing the matter for a number of days, they came back to King George and told him they had an answer to his command. They then assembled before the King and responded that the Jews were proof that God existed.

He’s lukewarm.

Good one.

But he's probably unaware what that means.

He reminds me of a very rich and spoiled kid, who because he has had so much, doesn’t see the value of anything. The evidence of God is all around him if he could open up his eyes and see all the spender and provision from a loving God’s hand that he has taken so completely for granted.

"I'm an amiable, low-voltage atheist intellect."

I'm pretty much done with George Will.

He's devolved into an avuncular dr-uncle, aka a moderate, and that species are a dime a dozen in the dead-tree media.
