Washington Archdiocese Warns Pastors of Demonstrations, Disruptions at Catholic Churches

The Archdiocese of Washington, DC, has warned priests that an unidentified group of protesters has staged demonstrations outside local Catholic churches, and in at least two cases entered the church to disrupt services.

Bishop Barry Knestout, the vicar general of the archdiocese, has written to all local priests, alerting them to the possibility of demonstrations. He reports that the group has used bullhorns to shout anti-Catholic slogans and has passed out “fundamentalist literature.” The bishop’s letter advises priests to alert their parish staff members, to be prepared for the possibility of demonstrations, and to contact police if there is any danger of disruptions.

Neither, I think.

Key word..."fundamentalist"......

Westboro Baptist or a clone thereof, I'd guess.

So, the Catholic Church softens it’s stance on sexual perverts, divorce and economics, and they are STILL not happy?!

The term [Fundamentalism] was born when conservative Protestants in early-20th-century America committed themselves to defend the five "fundamentals" of their faith -- the inerrancy of the Bible, virgin birth and deity of Jesus, doctrine of atonement, bodily resurrection of Jesus, and His imminent return.
-- from the thread The many forms of fundamentalism

Fundamentalist: A term created during the turn-of-the-20th-century Protestant church splits to define those who held to the “fundamentals” of Christianity—the inerrancy of the Bible, the virgin birth of Jesus and his literal resurrection from the dead. The term is now considered pejorative. (Wheaton College philosophy professor Alvin Plantinga famously observed, “The full meaning of the term…can be given by something like ‘stupid sumbitch whose theological opinions are considerably to the right of mine.’”)

I’m assuming these are “fundamentalist” so-called Christians and not Muslims (Salafists are often referred to as fundamentalists).

We had them come down to my Southern town and stand around outside the Cathedral with bullhorns haranguing people as they went in to Mass by screaming about the “Whore of Babylon,” etc. They also had a van (Tennessee plates) painted with anti-Catholic slogans that they would park right in front of the doors of the Cathedral.

They used to drive around the plaza again and again until that space opened up. Finally, the city decided to mark the space as a no-parking zone, just for drop-offs, and that harassment stopped.

Strangely, I haven’t seen them for a couple of years. They got a new van about 3 years ago, but I don’t think they’ve been back since. I guess they found greener pastures elsewhere.

Ah, finally some anti-Catholics that leftist bishops can fight back against with a clean conscience! Not like those homosexuals and abortion advocates.

I predict that all the fury that has been withheld from leftist dissenters will now be poured onto this group. And who knows? Maybe some bishops will require their priests to withhold communion from "Biblical literalists." I'm sure Wuerl and Dolan won't have any trouble doing that!

Maybe Francis will promulgate an "anti-Fundamentalist oath"--you know, when he formally defines evolution as a dogma.

It sounds as if they could have the same extreme view of the Catholic Church and are acting it out in a form of street evangelism. They may think the Catholics are going to hell and this is some outreach to save them. This is one reason to ask someone what denomination, sect, or group they affiliate with. They tend to be better behaved when you know who they represent.

You mean like these guys?

http://streetevangelization.com/

See, even Catholics use street evangelism. Legit evangelists are always respectful of the target demographic. Westboro and others who are doing something closer to demonstrations against something (in Westboro’s case apparently for profit) are in a different space than classic street evangelism. When you really want to win someone over, you don’t make them targets of hostile harassment. Makes no sense. Like my dad used to say, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Nothing new under the sun. Old timey guys have told me how the KKK and the Knights of Columbus used to have street fights on the Chicago west side years ago.

That was unnecessary...unless that is REALLY what you think. Do you really believe it sounds like a group from FR? Do you really believe FReepers would gather for the sole purpose of bashing a Catholic mass?

If not, consider asking mods to delete your inflammatory post. It detracts from the purpose of the article and incites readers to respond, as I did, instead of focusing on the article.

I am not Catholic, but have family/friends who go to mass in the area.

I do. If exposed to enough propaganda, you could do worse things than this.

Unfortunately, there are those in the forum who repeatedly jump on the Catholic threads and bad-mouth the Church, or the Mass, or the Virgin Mary, or whatever the topic is.

Personally, I believe that Catholics and Protestants can agree to disagree on certain points, but still work together against the common enemy. And, in fact, I have had Evangelical friends with whom I have done just that.

I just think it’s too bad that Catholic-bashing has been a regular practice in FR for such a long time. We should work together. On that, I think we agree.

Oh, I know..I know. Gets frustrating, to be sure...and I'm no saint in that, myself. Just hope you didn't really think a group from FR would get together to go interrupt a mass....unless there was a really great bar nearby. (THAT was a joke!) :)

TESTIFY! IMHO, Satan's work is half-done if he can get Catholics and Protestants to constantly swipe at each other. Anyway, thank you for the kind reply...and I agree with your sentiments.
