wouldn’t want any part of this money and the bad publicity attached to it.

As a longtime Fort Worth resident, I have been inside that church and know some members. As I said, I find the behavior of their leadership very strange and will be interested to hear how some of their members feel about the incident.

No, I suppose no evidence, but it would have been nice to hear what the little voice in your heart was saying. I would have listened to you.

On the surface it appears so. Even if NOT so, one would hope elders could foresee the bad light something like this would cast on their fellowship. Believers don’t need suicide money.

I thought life insurance policies are not paid out on a suicide as cause of death?

In a lot of Baptist churches the preacher is the Elder.

I know of many Baptist churches that are moving to a plurality of Elders, like many Presbyterian* Churches have, to do just that, avoid foolishness.

*Not counting the PC(USA) of course. Conservative Presbyterians have instituted safeguards to protect themselves from the foolishness of the PC(USA)

Interesting. Bottom line, we are not to blindly follow any man. Unfortunately the suck-up gene is strong in us and the Pastor/Elder/Teacher triumvirate completely dominates many. Why would God show some “nobody” believer Truth when “authorities” are blinded? Scripture shows many instances of it, so it happens. Uncomfortable as it is, we have to each grow into “mature manhood” spiritually (the flesh version of this is “boyhood” regardless of the braggadocio) and stand for the Gospel when so many are lying about the free gift of God in Christ (by demanding that you somehow merit it or earn it or keep it).

I think most do pay out if the suicide is more than 2 years after the policy was started

There’s generally an incontestability clause that kicks in (usually after two years). So the insurance company is protected where someone is buying a policy in contemplation of suicide, but otherwise will have to pay out.
