Its only a trickle, not yet a trend, but it is out there, and it has a name: sologamy. Sologamy is the marriage of someone to ones own selfthe his- or herness of it is not relevant, although it seems to be mostly women who are doing it. Apparently Linda Baker was the first person to marry herself back in December 1993. Others have followed suit, including Sara Sharpe, who wrote about her self-marriage in A Dress, A Ring, Promises to Self. And theres Nadine Schweigert, a thirty-six-year-old-woman from Fargo, North Dakota, who was interviewed by Anderson Cooper after marrying herself in front of some forty of her closest friends. I, Nadine, she said to herself, promise to enjoy inhabiting my own life and to relish a lifelong love affair with my beautiful self. Jennifer Hoes is a Dutch woman who did the same thing in 2003. Her same-self marriage was the subject of a recent ten-minute documentary by Aeon Magazine.
What is going on here? In the Christian tradition, marriage has historically been understood as a lifelong, conjugal covenant between a man and a woman, a union of love that involves the giving of oneself to God and to others. Today the institution of marriage, which has flourished not only among Christians but across many religious traditions of the world, is being challenged from many angles and by many practices. Until quite recently, these were all regarded as inimical to human flourishing in society. Such practices include so-called same-sex marriage, polygamy, incest, polyamorous relationships of various kindsand now sologamy.

Waiting for the nasty divorces.
It’s called BEING SINGLE. duh.
We are just a few years away from my dream; I want to be able to sue my younger self for the position I’ve put myself in and have my umbrella homeowners policy cover it.
Its called a mental disorder.
Its called “look at me, please pay attention to me”.
Or, can someone marry the voices in their head that only they hear?
Isn’t this a little, uh..., redundant?
Seriously, how stupid can you get?
Did she stand before a full length mirror to plight her troth to herself?
You just can’t make this stuff up and the jokes start writing themselves.
It’s being single with a dress and a cake.
It is not anything new, A woman that could not get a man or one who did not want one was called an old maid and a man in the same fix was called a bachelor, which would be the same as common law marriage between a man and woman..
So the only thing new is the ritual and a few feel good words.
Even a stink bug probably wants to feel good about himself.
I guess if you’re a liberal with split personalities it makes sense.
Sibyl winks
Men might sleep with themselves, but only women are crazy enough to marry themselves.
What in the world fun is THAT?
Nothing new. I have had several people suggest that I go conjugate a self marriage.
'til death do us part
I got a feeling Ayn Rand would be fine with that.
Well, with sologamy, now you can do that with a clear conscience.
