It's precisely because they have abandoned any efforts to change it from within that they are now getting themselves excommunicated. Why not just start their own church based on their own authority? Isn't that what they are claiming anyway - their own authority. Answer: because they don't want to merely express their own faith. What they want is to hurt the church and to try to bring it down.
I'd respect them if they started their own church. I might disagree with them, but I'd respect them.
