Bishop Emeritus Hubbard reflects on Gov. Mario Cuomo

ALBANY – When Mario Cuomo was sworn in to his first term as governor on January 1, 1983, a young Bishop Howard Hubbard delivered the invocation. Thirty-two years later, the now retired bishop remembers that moment with crystal clarity. But it’s what Cuomo said to him over breakfast on that inauguration day that stands out even more.

"He said to me, on that occasion, 'You know, I ran for office not for any personal reward, but I ran to serve the people of New York, and if you see there are some better ways in which I can serve the people of New York, I hope you will let me know.'" Hubbard said. "I think that was a very honest, from-the-heart remark on his part about why he was in public service."

Over the years, Hubbard stood with Cuomo many times in opposition to the death penalty (which Cuomo repeatedly vetoed). They disagreed, though, on abortion. As Cuomo explained in a 1984 speech at the University of Notre Dame, he personally opposed abortion while asserting that the government should not legislate against a woman’s right to choose.

"The American people need no course in philosophy or political science or church history to know that God should not be made into a celestial party chairman," Cuomo said in the speech, which is widely recognized as one of his most famous. "The weapons of the word and of love are already available to us: we need no statute to provide them."

Though Hubbard supports public policy restricting abortions, the bishop emeritus told NewsChannel 13 that he and Cuomo remained friendly. He went on to deliver the invocation at Cuomo’s second and third inaugurals, and he even attended Cuomo’s 82nd birthday party. "I'm very saddened because he was a great person and a great political leader," Hubbard said.

Poster comments on site are succinct and to the point. One person wrote: ""Bishop" Hubbard was a devil in a miter, who presided over and encouraged every manner of heresy, blasphemy in that archdiocese."

Ping!

He’s religiously praising a monster who spoke out of both sides of his mouth regarding the ruthless and disgusting slaughter of 3,300 unborn and newly born American babies.

They shouldn’t even allow his coffin to get anywhere near a Catholic Church. Disgusting!

” he personally opposed abortion while asserting that the government should not legislate against a woman’s right to choose.”

This has always been one of the most twisted , illogical and cowardly statements I’ve ever heard. No courage of personal convictions there !!

Doesn’t seem to be such a great leader to me

His ‘logic’ was no different than that of someone who is personally opposed to murder while asserting that the government should not legislate against a serial killer’s right to choose.

No difference at all.

There was the great quote by someone who when asked to describe Cuomo's good points looked blankly at the questioner and blurted out-"he always had a question for every answer."
Or at one of the Democrat conventions one of his yes men was asked by a reporter what Cuomo had accomplished for New York State-he remained silent while he thought a while and then said "have you seen the new restrooms on the [NY] Thruway? They're amazing."
I can almost picture the great Bob Grant meeting him in the afterlife with a hearty "how you doin' Sfacheme?"

Thanks for the post and ping. You just made my day! "he always had a question for every answer" ... how true! And the apple has not only fallen from the tree but it's rotten to the core, as well. Gov. Andrew Cuomo: Pro life conservatives have no place in Nee York

Big fan of Bob Grant! Used to listen to him every day. May he rest in peace.

In time, all of New York will probably be glad to be rid of him and his dad too.

I lived in Cuomo’s NY. His son continues, as obama continues, for the nation.

Sfacheme

I haven't heard that in years: not since one of my aunts would come after me, apron on, hair in a bun, biting her index finger of one hand and waving a wooden spoon with the other!!! : ) I still don't know the exact meaning; at the time it meant RUN!!!

Funny, today that would not necessarily be considered a happy memory, but what I wouldn't give to go back to those times. Thanks for the memory!

Mario Cuomo didn’t care about the people of NYS since he practically ruined it. Andrew is now finishing the job. Both Cuomo’s have only served one Master - themselves. Bishop Hubbard is a spineless coward and his “reflections” of Cuomo have no meaning to anyone. Just bury this pro-murder monster and pray that God have mercy on him.

“he personally opposed abortion while asserting that the government should not legislate against a woman’s right to choose”.

Abortion Ken Cuomo needs to read the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It is IMPOSSIBLE to claim you are personally opposed to abortion and at the same time do nothing to stop abortion in the public arena. He aided and abeded the murder of untold thousands of children before he was governor of NY, while he was governor, and after he was governor. He was an monster of the first degree.

Get ready for a burial in St. Patrick’s Cathedral with blow-hard democrat-operative Dolan praising the abortion monster to high heaven.

I was wrong on the location of his burial. It will be in another huge Catholic Church, where pro-abortion democrat celebrities and politicians are given the royal treatment by Catholic Church.

His funeral is set to be held at Saint Ignatius Loyola Church in Manhattan on January 6.[41]

I believe that’s where Philip Seymour Hoffman’s service was held, too.

Is Dolan officiating?
