I was flipping channels and came across Dr. Charles Stanley preaching a sermon. I am, in general, suspicious of TV preachers. But Stanley came across as the real deal. Anyone care to offer opionions on his ministry?
There was a very visible scandal with the divorce and the fallout with his son. They were a big deal at the time and he lost a lot of support.
Charles Stanley is a wonderful and humble preacher. I have listened to him for years. I think has endured some difficult situations in life, and done so in a Godly way.
The preacher whose teaching I absolutely love, is Charles Price. He is British, and his ministry is called “Living Truth”. He pastors at People’s Church in Toronto. I learn a lot from him.
I also tune in David Jeremiah, Robert Jeffress, plus I will watch the Van Impes for a little change of pace and current events information.
I don’t care for preachers who yell. I don’t like theatrics, hype, showmanship, someone who is a little too into themselves and their performance. Give me a nice, straight-forward teacher any day.
MM gives me the creeps. I do not know what it is about him that makes me feel that way. I came across him recently and he was playing the piano and singing. He should stick with that because he was good.
He & billy graham are two of my favorite preachers & I’m a catholic. If I lived in their neck of the woods I’d join them!
Charles Stanley is one of the most Biblically sound preachers on mass media today. And the man tries to live by the things he preaches.
Unfortunately, one cannot always be successful.
Over 20 years ago, he had a personal problem that almost affected his ministry. His wife then of 25 years, Anna Stanley, for reasons I don’t know, became unhappy with their marriage and originally filed for divorce on June 22, 1993, following their separation in spring of 1992; but, the two of them agreed Anna would amend the lawsuit to seek a legal separation instead (”separate maintenance”), while seeking reconciliation.
She again filed for divorce on March 20, 1995. The Moody Radio Network station in Atlanta (then WAFS-AM) took Stanley’s daily broadcast off the air during that time, as managers concluded there was no sign of reconciliation. The divorce was finalized in 2000.
Charles Stanley’s divorce from his wife Anna in 2000 after several years of separation caused a minor controversy in the Southern Baptist Convention, a matter which was complicated by reports that Stanley had said he would resign as pastor if he became divorced.
At the time, he did not believe his separation would result in divorce; however, when it did, the FBA members overwhelmingly voted to keep him on as pastor. According to church bylaws, Stanley will remain eligible to be pastor of First Baptist Church of Atlanta as long as he does not remarry. He has kept to this agreement for over 14 years.
Also, FYI, Charles Stanley’s son Andy Stanley is the pastor of North Point Community Church in nearby Alpharetta, Georgia.
Stanely’s is authentic..and theologically sound .
Shepherd’s chapel biblically straight you have to be kidding me! This is nothing more than a skinheads program. dr. Charles stanley and the Shepherds Chapel are not in the same camp. If my memeory serves me right Charles Stanley was the president of Southern Baptist Seminary and also president for a time of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Did you actually read the cooments from the various Chrisitians?
Looks to me like every one of them is in support of him for the very reason you claim we all disagree.
Thanks for that summary of what happened.
Another preacher I like with no pretense and good solid teaching is Alliter Begg.
Dr Stanley is a Bible Believing GOOD Guy. But his son Andy is questionable at best.
I like him.
Charles and Andy have reconciled after many years of estrangement, but they are still struggling with their relationship.
As I understand, Andy wanted his Dad to step down as pastor after the divorce because Andy saw the damage the situation was causing to the church. Charles felt that Andy was abandoning him.
I have read comments on the situation which led me to believe that Charles’s wife had no interest in working through their difficulties.
In any case, the situation shows us all that just because you’re a Christian doesn’t mean that your walk is going to be easy and doesn’t mean that it’s always easy for you to find forgiveness and heal broken relationships.
Chuck Swindoll
Erwin Lutzer (Moody Church)
David Jeremiah
Charles Stanley
James McDonald
Then I came across Steve Schell out of Seattle. There is no wiser voice on the airwaves. Anywhere.
Blows me away, and no connection to the guy or the church at all.
Which is not what is claimed. And do you know of any model for determining Truth that resolves all differences, and or produced comprehensive unity?
What system is most effective at doing so, and is it Scriptural?
But under what basis are both men and writings of God to be established as being so? The weight of Scriptural substantiation as supreme or the premise of ensured magisterial veracity?
Under which system are the most heretical errors seen?
Is the claim to unity to be based upon paper professions or what is overall manifest by what people do?
Are those who hold most strongly to Scripture being the wholly inspired and accurate word of God manifestly more unified in commonly held Biblical basic values and Truths than Catholics overall?
A couple more who passed away in the past ten years but may still be on in reruns are D.James Kennedy of CoralGables ,FL and Adrian Rogers of Tennessee
Stanley is a bit lacking in the integrity department. Promised his congregation that he would step down if he ever got a divorce. Then backed up on that and kept his paycheck when the divorce came through. Had a split with his son (Andy Stanley) who started a competing church nearby which is now bigger and more influential - I understand that they have since reconciled.
They (First Baptist Atlanta) brought in a pastor from another megachurch to ensure a smooth transition; he was left twisting in the wind when Charles Stanley reneged on his pledge.
I don’t fault him for the divorce - his wife was a bit crazy - but I do fault him for hanging on to the job contrary to his promises.
His theology is pretty much mainstream Southern Baptist. There are a lot of TV preachers that are much worse to listen to.
He likes to say “Now listen” a lot. :-)
Close, but it was Coral Ridge Presbyterian in Fort Lauderdale, FL
and Adrian Rogers of Tennessee
Whose most important accomplishment was his role in turning back the Southern Baptist Convention from its then descent into mainline liberalism.
I spent decades in a city about 80% Catholic. Not only were most Catholics not of one mind, but except for the most commonly taught Catholic beliefs, they were not even aware of most Catholic beliefs. If you took the Catholic catechism, and gave them a multiple choice test on it, in which one selection was an accurate quote from the Catechism and the other choices inserted words like NOT or changed a few words altogether, I have to believe most would fail it miserably. Same thing on the Bible. Polls have shown Catholics and largely Catholic areas not to know it or regularly read it for the most part. For example, a recent Pew poll found only around 40% of white Catholics could name Genesis as the first book while around 80% of evangelicals could.
