St Ignatius of Antioch, taught by the Apostle John and eventually martyred in Rome for his Faith in the Lord, told us the Gnostics in his day abstained from the Eucharist because they denied the Eucharist was the Body of the Lord.I would not go to communion in a Roman church because I do not partake in Idolatery BTW.. like Rome the gnostics believed they had some secret knowledge

The Gnostics also denied Jesus HAD a literal flesh and blood body. Most all of the arguments we read from the early church fathers concerning the eucharist are defending THAT truth against the Donatists and Gnostics who denied Christ's incarnation. I don't know why this fact is so often ignored.
