A police statement...said...as he was praying over the coffin at a cemetery near Brasilia, the ground suddenly gave way and he and three others...fell into the grave.

The priest was not immediately available for comment but the G1 news portal quoted him as saying the incident "ruined the moment.

Trying to slide into heaven, no doubt.

That’s why this priest is banned from the Grand Canyon.

I went out to eat with a group of people a few years back, and one of the people in the group was a former priest who had recently left the priesthood.

He told us a story about the first time he did a funeral by himself (I guess they kind of monitor you to make sure you do things correctly the first few times)

He said the Monsignor was on hand, so he was pretty nervous. While he was performing the service, he stepped backwards and somehow fell between the casket and the grave. They had to haul him out, and everybody was pretty shaken.

He said every time he did a funeral after that, he noticed a flurry of activity with the cemetery people scurrying around, putting stanchions and ropes around the grave.

We were howling at the story, because he had a funny face, and the way he told it made it even funnier.

We were at a fancy restaurant, and made quite a scene. It was a small restaurant, probably 15 tables, but very expensive. We went around to the other patrons who had, unbeknownst to us, been giving us dirty looks, and we had been so caught up we didn’t notice, so we brought drinks and dessert for all the people in there. It was a bit embarrassing, but we were friends with the owner, and he was with us, laughing as well.

.....fell into the grave.

Definitely one of those "I hate when that happens" moments.

Just curious - why did your friend leave the priesthood?

I'm not judging, I'm just curious.

When I was an altar boy, we used to go into the locker where they kept the wine and the hosts, and we would drink the wine and eat the hosts, which they kept in what appeared to be a clear trash bag, like potato chips.

The big hosts were separate, and they had them in a separate box...we would hold them up and break them in half, muttering vaguely familiar latin incantations...

I felt pretty sure there was some kind of special Hell reserved for such un-pious altar boys, but when I told a priest about it later in life, he said “Nah...you’re good...they weren’t blessed yet, so it was the same as eating Ritz crackers!”

not his fault, if the ground gave way.

I have no idea...I only met him that once, though the other people knew him quite well.

I have a suspicion, based on his behavior, that he simply was too unserious and not cut out for it. Seriously, he had us with tears rolling down our faces, we were laughing so hard at his story.

It could have been worse if they had broken a gas line and flames leapt up when they fell into the grave.
