Long ago we let the left start referring to “civil ceremonies” (ones that where a judge joins two people together) as marriages. When they were NOT. A civil ceremony has as much in common with the holy sacrament of marriage as a bath does to a baptism!

The problem with this argument is that the legal institution of marriage predates the holy sacrament of marriage, and has existed in places with no Christian (or Jewish, etc.) religious tradition/history.

The correct argument is that nouns have meanings, and just as a legislature or a judge cannot make fire not hot, or water not wet, that cannot make two men or two women “married”.

Given the historical and cross-cultural evidence (never at any time, any where, in any religious or civil context), this seems like an easy argument to make.
