Last week, there was an article stating that 34,000 Black churches were splitting away from PCUSA (interesting acronym) for the same reason.

Unlike most denominations the PCUSA owns the church facilities and the pastors retirement funds.. and so if a congregation wants to leave the denomination they have no claim on the church and the pastor loses his retirement plan.. so usually they negotiate a "buy out " in the case of the church I recently started attending it was $500,000 ...
There is nothing stopping them all from just walking away... but that leaves he facility in the hands of the PCUSA and the probability they will send in a new pastor and start up a new church
