As an Orthodox Christian I have heard about the date of Passover accounting for the difference, but it is 100% due to the Orthodox setting future dates of Pascha (Easter) when the Julian calendar was used. Those selected dates will be up in around 75 years (a blink of an eye in Orthodox terms) so maybe we will be harmonized with the West then.

You appear to be making a compelling argument for why a handful of local churches should not have arbitrarily taken it upon themselves to tinker with the calendar back in 1923.
