According to the natural law, even successive polygamy (as in societies that legalize marriage after divorce) hinders the proper care and education of children. And it places an intolerable burden on practicing mutual love between the spouses.

Catholic tradition has consistently interpreted Christ's teaching as absolutely forbidding polygamy, and the prohibition was defined by the Council of Trent, pronouncing anathema against anyone who says that "it is lawful for Christians to have several wives at the same time

“Successive polygamy”

Salvation, thank you very much for this very useful phrase! I fully intend to use it in the future!

Nearly all the old testament prophets had more than one wife.

Numbers 12
1 And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman.

The Lord Himself says that Moses marrying another woman was righteous.

Actual blessings from God were passed through blood lines. God wanted those blessings distributed through several specific lineages for His purposes.

Therefore, God may command individuals to have more than one wife for His purposes. This is the same as God sending His people to war. It's for His purposes. It's not murder if God is directing the prophet to do it.

In the same way polygamy isn't adultery if God is telling you to do it.
