Emo Philips:

Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump.

I said, “Don’t do it!”
He said, “Nobody loves me.”

I said, “God loves you. Do you believe in God?”
He said, “Yes.”

I said, “Are you a Christian or a Jew?”
He said, “A Christian.”

I said, “Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?”
He said, “Protestant.”

I said, “Me, too! What franchise?”
He said, “Baptist.”

I said, “Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?”
He said, “Northern Baptist.”

I said, “Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?”
He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist.”

I said, “Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?”
He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region.”

I said, “Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?”
He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912.”

I said, “Die, heretic!” And I pushed him over.

I haven’t posted in any religious threads I don’t think, but as a non religious person I don’t approve of bashing of any religion. Intelligent criticism is another story, but simply bad mouthing any religion for the sake of bad mouthing them or because you don’t agree with their theology is a bad idea.

I find the attacks on religion in general in this country to be very alarming. The US has adopted Christian morals and values for over 200 years, and the breakdown of those morals and values in the past 50 years is troubling. Atheist groups demanding anything religious be removed from public areas claiming it offends them, prayer in schools banned years ago, football teams being chastised because they pray on the field...and that just scratches the surface.

I find the insulting and ridicule of any religion unacceptable. As I said, thoughtful criticism should be ok, there is a difference. For example, I don’t agree with some of the positions the Pope has taken, but I don’t appreciate people calling him rude names because they don’t like his positions.

I think people should consider this. The golden rule, according to most of the world’s leading religions is the same. And great advice:

Treat other people the way you would want them to treat you. [paraphrased]

If you simply try to observe that advice, whether you’re a religious person or not, you won’t run around insulting people concerning religion or anything else.

Just ask yourself, would I want this person to do this to me? If the answer is no, don’t do it to them. Simple.

So I’m all for this, no religious bashing.
