Mercy yes! But mercy comes after sorrow and a firm purpose of amendment.
Yes, God is merciful to sinners who repent. But not to those who freely choose to remain in their sins, despite the offer of mercy. And still less to those in the Church hierarchy who encourage such sinners to remain in their sins and tell them it’s OK.
