I view doubting the ages given in the Word of God as doubting God.
“All I know for sure is that God is absolutely sovereign.”
Amen!
“Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom He wants to harden”—Romans 9
At the flood there was a dramatic genetic bottleneck. A single mutation could’ve caused the reduction in ages. Also, God granted men the right to eat meat.
Interestingly, according to the generations passages, Abraham could have met Noah, and Noah could have told him that Noah’s dad Lamech could have met Adam. No scriptural evidence, but possible based on when they were born and when they died. Oral histories could therefore be seen in a whole different light.
I think it’s likely that people aged far more slowly in that time. According to the generations passages, nobody married until they were over 100 years old. That may have been as soon as they reached maturity back then.
Even now, there’s a rare genetic problem in children where they age very very slowly, but is usually fatal, probably because it’s combined with all the other genetic mutations.
Most of what Kent Hovind said made sense to me. He got into a lot of strange conspiracy stuff though. I would say, “If this stuff was true, they wouldn’t let him say it.” Then the government put him in prison on trumped up tax evasion charges. Well, what do I do with that?
If someone got confused and wrote down the number of lunar months as years, you’d get ages like 910 instead of 70.
I am not sure what passage you are referencing.
Hebrews talks about Melchizedek as being a picture of Christ. And Hebrews also talks about the Hebrew high priests and sacrifices as being shadows, of something better to come -- namely the Great High Priest: our Lord Jesus Christ - who made one sacrifice forever, to provide the necessary atonement for fallen man.
But the first eleven chapters of Genesis are never treated as an allegory - just historical fact. This was the position of Moses and Jesus Christ - and all the Bible.
Not based on when they beget offspring. Based on that theory, Seth would’ve had Enos at 8 years old, Enos would’ve had Cainan at 7 years old, Cainan would’ve had Mahalaleel at 5 years old, etc. So that don’t wash, because if they were counting lunar months for the overall age, they would’ve had to do the same thing for their begets.
“This was the position of Moses and Jesus Christ - and all the Bible.”
On the contrary these early books of Moses contained the “law of Moses”. Jesus specifically said that these were the laws of men and not of God”.
I didn’t read every reply but I always figured it was because originally, God designed Adam to live forever. Once sin was committed, the aging process began. As time went on, people’s bodies became less and less durable.
“Don’t take the Bible literally,” now you’ve done it.
Some of the comments on this thread are hilarious. I just can’t believe that in the space age we cling to bronze age beliefs. It just boggles my mind.
And it’s repeated all the way into Revelation:
Rev 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
Rev 10:6 And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:
Rev 14:7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
And it’s dangerous stuff to add to or take away from this book:
Rev 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
Rev 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
Exactly.
As sin corrupted the genes, longevity decreased.
I’ve heard a few say that men were vegetarian before the flood, but what about Abel the shepherd, and Cain the produce farmer?
I’ve wondered if such an obvious cataclysm that could produce the Biblical flood didn’t slow the orbit of earth and the rotation of it, making a day and a year longer in real time.
Gen 1:29 And God said, See, I have given you every plant producing seed, on the face of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit producing seed: they will be for your food:
Gen 9:3 Every living and moving thing will be food for you; I give them all to you as before I gave you all green things.
In short, just because Abel was a shepherd doesn’t mean he ate the sheep. They were used for clothing and for burnt sacrifices. Those who weren’t in the godly line probably ate meat before the flood, because they were all disobedient all the time, but there’s no scriptural support either way.
Sorry, should’ve labeled the first Genesis passage as the rules that applied from creation to the flood. The second Genesis passage is the rules after the flood.
