Yes, exactly the type of stuff you posted. How can space age man read that with a straight face? Now, if you were to read it as metaphor that opens you up to greater mystery...that’s a different story.

LOL! 'Space Age Man'... LOL! That's a laugh-riot!

To take it as metaphor destroys the prophets. Cannot be done. Or the prophecy is mere metaphor too - which is not true.

I’m not part of your conversation, nor do I quite understand the object of your mutual derision in referring to 2Peter3. But if you’d care to explain your thesis, perhaps I can help resolve it for you.

[...] your mutual derision in referring to 2Peter3 [...]

You have misread me if you think I take 2Pet 3 lightly. That is not the case. What left me in derision is the notion of 'Space Age Man'...

Homo-Sapiens Sapiens = Wise Man...

Rom 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
Rom 1:23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

The binominal name Homo sapiens is due to Carl Linnaeus (1758). The Atomic Age started in July 1945. Space Age started in October 4, 1957. I doubt Carl or the authors of the Bible had any idea that we could split the atom and craft a bomb that could destroy entire civilizations back to the stone age. I seriously doubt they could even contemplate that we could engineer a rocket with 650 kN of thrust that could put a man on the moon. What about these facts leave you in a state of derision?

That last paragraph makes perfect sense to me. I don't have a problem with the concept of incredibly long ages. I suppose God didn't let their eyes dim and their natural force abate, as was said of Moses. I do wonder what their lives must have been like, seeing such change in the world. Isaac got old and didn't see well, which does make me curious as to what their lives were like.... CURIOUS, LORD, JUST CURIOUS! please, God don't start making us live long again! I can't handle things as it is! 😨

" As the generations went by within the framework of a cursed/fallen world, our genes began to “drift” and the only reason we maintain even a semblance of 3 score and 10 or 4 score is our modern medicines. "

That, and a lot of patience on God's part!

I wonder when they did begin to show signs of aging- especially arthritis. No kidding. And it wasn't easy to get around, either. They either walked, or had to climb onto something to go any long distances. Hopefully they had progeny who gave a darn...

Yow!!! I'd be happy with 65 all the time. I don't even like dry heat. Then again, I don't like 8 feet of snow outside my door, either. Lol....

You know what would be great about the longevity issue? The wisdom the experience, the stories, and all the other things you could learn from your elders! That's a lot of history in one lifetime...
Only thing is, it would hurt that much more when it was finally their time to pass... Saying goodbye to them: contemporaries for centuries, then they're gone.

A little of both heredity and environment with us today, I think. My Dad was only 60. Lung cancer. His Mom’s family were all in their 80’s. Old age, and 1 with heart attack. God’s decision...

“* Those who lived many hundreds of years were vegetarians, as God wished. Meat-eaters presumably died younger, from the accumulation of metals in their bodies. After the Flood, God permitted the faithful to become carnivorous (Gen. 9:2-3), which dramatically shortens lifespans from several hundred years to only one or two hundred.”

Then why did God accept Abel’s offering of meat but not Cain’s offering of grain?

Then why did God accept Abel’s offering of meat but not Cain’s offering of grain?

Genesis 4:2b-5a (NIV):

Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. In the course of time
Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD.
But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock.
The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor.

Moses provides the explanation amidst the description, to ensure we do not miss the point. He describes Cain's offering matter-of-factly as "some of the fruits of the soil," with no indication that there was anything special about those fruits. Contrast that with his description of Abel's offering, where he describes the meat as "fat" from the "firstborn." He is indicating why Abel's offering was acceptable, and why Cain's was not--because Abel offered from--sacrificed--his very best, and Cain did not. Abel was wholeheartedly acknowledging the True Source of his flocks, but Cain was not.

God favoring Abel's flesh offering does not contradict His instruction for vegetarianism. God Himself is not a vegetarian (!), and an obedient Abel would have kept flocks not for their meat but for their milk and wool and hides and bladders and dung and...

Correctly interpreting the Bible requires that we integrate everything it says on a topic. So, Hebrews 11:4 adds the finishing touch:

By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did.
By faith he was commended as a righteous man,
when God spoke well of his offerings.
And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.

I doubt [...] the authors of the Bible had any idea that we could split the atom and craft a bomb that could destroy entire civilizations back to the stone age.

Then it seems your knowledge of the prophecy leaves much to be desired.

I seriously doubt they could even contemplate that we could engineer a rocket with 650 kN of thrust that could put a man on the moon.

There is nothing new under the sun.

What about these facts leave you in a state of derision?

Man has lost so very much in knowledge over the last 100 years - Wisdom has fled. He has put all his effort into chasing false signs and wonders. Wait till it all falls down - And it necessarily will - Then you will see how naked and bereft your 'Space Age Man' really is. He is far less than those who came before him.

Though he personally seems to believe they lived really long lives, he allows for doubt.

Which is consistent with relegating OT historical accounts at "fables" and "folk tales" which Rome via the sanctioned commentary of her NAB has been teaching for decades.

I just can’t believe that in the space age we cling to bronze age beliefs. It just boggles my mind.
For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
Jesus

As an atheist, how do you explain the Shroud of Christ and its’ 3D image that still has not been duplicated...even with the high-tech technology in our “space age”?
