Statue of Newly Sainted Missionary Vandalized in Carmel By NBC Bay Area Staff

A statue of Father Junipero Serra was vandalized at the church where he is buried overnight Saturday in Northern California, according to the church.

Serra was canonized as a saint by Pope Francis this week in a controversial move – some Native Americans say the California's missions, which Serra helped found, cut their ancestors off from their traditional languages and cultures and enslaved those who converted to Christianity.

Dude, if you're gonna deface any Serra statue, deface this one overlooking I280.

It could only improve its looks.

I’m no Catholic, but Serra was a man deserving to be honored. Lived a simple life, a humble man who held himself to a very tough standard as a priest. Then he traveled to California. From Spain he might as well have been on Mars. And he tried to civilize the heathen Indians.

Only a sorehead would not have respect for him.

I hope no offense, but...

Maybe because the Pope failed to mention Jesus in his recent visit to the U.S.A.?

We could only hope this is the reason, rather than a rabid liberal...

Did you read all his speeches? He did mention Jesus and God several times.

Your statement is wrong.

“Maybe because the Pope failed to mention Jesus in his recent visit to the U.S.A.?”

Lame theory botard...
Not Indian activists who hate being Christianized,
Not California athiests,,

No, you hope it was people parsing the popes speech and angry it wasn’t evangelical enough. Guess it’s five o’ clock somewhere.

"...some Native Americans say the California's missions, which Serra helped found, cut their ancestors off from their traditional languages and cultures..."

And dragged them kicking and screaming out of the Stone Age, introducing them to such novel concepts as written language, metal-working, the wheel...

It is sad that they dared to deface his headstone, which is a simple little 12x12” tile in floor of the main chapel.

An elaborate ossuary was made for him at his death that was too big to fit through the chapel doors, and since it was his wish to be buried near the altar, it was never used for the purpose. Father Serra was buried in the floor at the foot of the altar, and some other religious was buried in the fancy tomb in the side room.

Fr. Serra loved poverty.

I am somewhat torn, it is hard for me to switch from “Father Serra” to “Saint Junipero Serra”. Anyone else having that problem?
