John the Baptist

1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold

5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.

8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, 9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Today we start a new character study of John the Baptist. The Gospel of Luke begins with the story of John's miraculous birth to very old parents. John's father, Zechariah and his mother Elizabeth were good decent people who kept God's law, and yet had remained childless. In that time and culture this was a sad and almost shameful situation, and was thought to be a punishment from God. Yet, Luke takes great pains to tell us that the infertility of this couple was not the result of sin, as they were good people and lived righteously. Zechariah is a priest in the Holy Temple, and this particular year, was chosen by lot to enter the Holy of Holies. It is here that we begin our study of this fascinating Bible Character.

The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

Originally, the sign on the Cross of Jesus had the INRI (Jesu Nazareth Rex Juden) in Latin, the "J" pronounced as a "y." But it was also in Aramaic, Greek and Hebrew (alphabetical).
Why the Latin version stuck I don't know.
