Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Carravaggio's Painting of the Death of John The Baptist

Character Studies From The Bible

John the Baptist

7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead, 8 others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life. 9 But Herod said, “I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?” And he tried to see him.

(Luke 9)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

In a last nod to John The Baptist, this Passage from Luke gives us insight into prevailing attitudes and also to the thoughts of Herod.

Hearing reports of a new miracle working Rabbi in town and all the speculations that go with that, Herod gets reports from his spies about the rumors that are flying around. The same questions arise about Jesus that came up during John's Ministry.

Is this Elijah? Was it the "Prophet"? Is He the Messiah? However, there is also a new question that is floated: "Could this be John The Baptist raised from the dead?

The last speculation is silly, as people had seen John and Jesus together at the same time, and it was known that they were two separate people!

This single verse shows us that the people of the time believed in the resurrection of the dead, and speak of it freely and naturally. It also shows Herod's guilty conscience as word of a new Preacher in town causes him fear and anxiety over his beheading of John.

The Scriptures tell us that John's disciples buried his body in a secret place, and went and told his beloved cousin Jesus, Who, from accounts, mourned the loss of His cousin and friend.

Tradition holds that John's head was brought, in secret, to Damascus and interred in one of the most ancient Christian Churches on record. Of course, that sacred site is now covered up by the huge Omayyad Mosque in an attempt to displace any trace of Christianity. But the story of John the Baptist lives on.

Tomorrow we go back to the Old Testament to learn about the pioneer and post-exile governor of Judea, named Nehemiah.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"The Feast Of Herod"
Peter Paul Rubens - 1633

_ OW Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;

And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.

And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.

They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
