Is this common Catholic or, perhaps, Argentine phraseology? Could it have lost something in the translation? How is his statement different from what other world leaders have said? Not sure I understand your question.

I think that FP means that is is an odd way of phrasing it. When someone states in English that he is close to someone, it usually means that he knows that person, has some sort of personal relationship with him. Am I right, FP?
