Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

Paul

(Paul's Letter to The Romans)

13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God's servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

(Romans 13)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Romans 13 presents an issue that causes debate among Bible Scholars. There are those who insist that Believers should be in submission to the governing authorities even if those authorities are evil. They cite as their proof that the Roman Empire, which was the government during Paul's time, was not very nice at all!

There are others (and I fall into this category) who say that good citizenship is a definite hallmark of Christianity only up to the point where it conflicts with the Law of God. Paul was a Roman Citizen, and proud of it, yet he ended up in jail constantly because he could not keep quiet about his faith. Roman Law said that Caesar was a "god", and one of the duties of a Citizen was to worship Caesar. Paul wouldn't do that, so he suffered the consequences.

In our own time, History is full of very special heroes who broke civil law in order to keep the Law of God. People like Corrie Ten Boom, Oskar Schindler, Raoul Wallenberg, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer will live forever in the hearts of Israel for saving Jews during WW2. Some would argue that Nazism wasn't a legitimate form of government, so it was OK to defy them. There are others who say that the last 8 years or so of our own history have been usurped by election fraud and subterfuge, and are not representative of America.

This presents a dilemma for Believers who really do want to abide by Romans 13, but can't go against their conscience. I know where I stand on this, but you may differ. In any case, we all have to realize that our decisions have consequences, and, like Paul, we must be willing to face them.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Thank-you for your reflections of the Letter of Paul to the Romans. Romans 13 is not an easy read, and it also is a reminder that those who are in public service have to lead as servant leaders as well and not abuse their position of leadership.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"The Apostle Paul"
St. Peter's, Vatican ~ Adamo Tadolini, 1838

_ ET every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
