I wonder if it might be best to get over this lightning thing? It’s become almost a superstition that it was a sign of disapproval from God, or “god” since actually it’s rather pantheistic. It’s a nice dramatic or literary touch, but after a while it seems to take away from what is seriously being discussed. Is anyone going to believe the litany of Francis’ wrongs when the author begins by talking about Zeus-like thunderbolts?
The dome of St. Peter’s is the highest point in Rome. Therefore nothing is more normal than for it to be hit during storms. The gizmos that prevent damage (rods, grounding, all that) are safely in place. Lightning striking the dome is neither new nor unique.
Of course anyone who believes this was a sign from God is perfectly welcome to hold that personal view. It could be so, who knows? Just don’t broadcast it if you want to be taken seriously.
