Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
Character Studies From The Bible
John
The Gospels)
(John 6)
6 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival was near.
5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat? 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7 Philip answered him, It would take more than half a years wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!
8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peters brother, spoke up, 9 Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?
10 Jesus said, Have the people sit down. There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted. 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
14 After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world. 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
"Miracle of the Bread and Fish"
by
Giovanni Lanfranco-1620-23
The Miracle of the bread and Fish is one of the few miracles of Jesus that is reported in all four Gospels.
John's account stands out, as he reports rhetorical questions posed by Jesus to His Disciples, using the wonderful teaching method of stimulating His students to think! John also mentions the Disciples by name and quotes them. By reading the Gospel of John, we not only get to know the Character of Jesus, but that of His Disciples as well.
John is an excellent eyewitness!

This story is encouraging. One takeaway is, though there’s a daunting task ahead, make due with even the scant resources at hand. And the Lord will bless it.
Joining in prayer, left that other site, for Israel, our beloved America, all those who stand in the gap to keep evil at bay, and all God’s people.

From Guzik:
a. Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat? Why did Jesus ask Philip this question? Maybe because he was from Bethsaida (John 1:44) and this is near where this miracle took place (Luke 9:10).
b. He said this to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do: Jesus also lets His followers participate in the work of the Kingdom, even when He has things planned out.
c. Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient: Their problem is in two parts. First, they don’t have the resources to feed the multitude. Second, even if they did have the money it would be impossible to purchase enough bread to feed them all.
d. Philip’s knowledge of the situation was accurate and impressive (two hundred denarii is more than six month’s wages), but his knowledge was useless in getting the problem solved.
Bring peace to Jerusalem in another way in addition to prayer. Support Jewish outreach (eg Ariel and Moriel ministries)
One of the very best Bible expositors today is a 5’4” Jew named Arnold Fruchtenbaum. Fabulous teacher.
