(Revelation 2)

To the Church in Pergamum

12 “To the angel of the church in Pergamum write:

These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword. 13 I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.

14 Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality. 15 Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. 16 Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

17 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

In the Torah (Numbers 22-25) there is the story of Balaam the "Prophet for Profit" who was residing in the Promised Land when the Israelites arrived from the Exodus. Balaam was hired by the local king to CURSE the People of Israel, but God would not allow that to happen. God even used Balaam's faithful little donkey to stop the Curse, which was bought and paid for in advance.

When Balaam was only able to pronounce Blessings instead of Curses, he did the next "best" thing. He and King Balak got the women of their community to entice the Israelite men into immorality and idolatry. This began a pattern of behavior that would eventually bring down the reign of Solomon's son, and bring about Division, Warfare, Defeat, Exile, and Dispersion.

John of Patmos, in delivering this Message from Jesus, tells the Church at Pergamon that they are NOT immune to the results of sin in their midst. Also, they are tolerant of the Nicolatians (discussed earlier) in their church. This Letter follows the "Good News/Bad News" Pattern of the others, starting with the commendations and finishing with the Warnings.
