THE Catholic Church needs to have an open discussion on celibacy and welcome LGBTQ people as priests in the fallout from the Maynooth affair.
That is according to Cork senator and former Fine Gael TD for Cork South Central, Jerry Buttimer, who trained for the priesthood for five years in Maynooth before returning to lay life.
Mr Buttimer became the first openly gay Fine Gael TD in advance of the fight for marriage equality in last years historic referendum. He is a committed Catholic, despite the opposition within the faith to homosexuality, which is regarded as sinful.
He was speaking as the fallout continues following allegations that a gay subculture was operating in Maynooth when trainee priests were supposed to be following a vow of celibacy. Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin, said he would be sending trainees in his diocese to Rome instead of Maynooth following the revelations.
Other Bishops, including Dr John Buckley of Cork and Ross, have confirmed their trainees will continue in Maynooth.
Mr Buttimer said: The events of the past week in the Irish Church have, for me, highlighted the need for the Irish hierarchy to embrace LGBT people of faith and make them part of our Church.
He said it was hardly a surprise that there were gay people studying for the priesthood as well as heterosexual men. He urged Church leaders to embrace gay men wanting to become priests.

LOL. Dude named BUTTimer pushing gay propaganda. The jokes just write themselves.
Already got ‘em. They have cost the church many dollars and much credibility.
I cannot put into words my dislike of what they have done to the church that I still believe in but do not attend. So I will keep my big mouth shut and pray that someday it will turn around.
Bbaaaawwaaashhhh...the BIBLE? IT’S ALL about him...not some stupid Bible...
I couldn't get past the name either. They say our families were named for their profession in times of old. I can only guess why he would have had the surname of "Buttimer (Butt timer) unless he comes from a long line of male prostitutes. I guess what they say about "time is money" is true.
The left doesn't read the bible. Why would a gay priest? I once had a pastor of the false prophet variety tell me he didn't read the bible. He said it was boring. The fruits he bore and his behavior pretty much confirmed it as well. Made me wonder why he was even a pastor.
Liberals want to rewrite the constitution and the bible.
Since priests are celibate anyway, it shouldn’t matter.
Those who are not celibate have broken their vows, in the eyes of God, the Church and man.
The Bible is quite clear on this.
