(Vanity) What do y'all think of Andy Stanley?

Posted on 08/31/2016 10:59:10 AM PDT by 2nd Amendment

I'm quite serious, here. I've always admired Andy Stanley. My kids have went to Northpoint Church in Atlanta and I've enjoyed his messages. Now I'm starting to read criticisms of him regarding emergent theology, Biblical reinterpretation, and other topics meant to cater to millenials. Do yo think this guy is orthodox is he heading down the wrong path? I know he is in the top 5 of megapastors in the US.

I am a big fan of Andy. We are in a bible study group and have used several of his studies. In my opinion he preaches The Word.

No. According to Wikipedia, his churches are non-denominational, evangelical Christian.

I don’t know that much about him but I think very highly of his father, Dr. Charles Stanley.

Aren’t we all on board with him on getting the spotlight off the Bible? After all, who needs scripture when they can have a megachurch.

Maybe after he fixes the problems he sees with the Bible, he might be more willing to use it. And certainly, we shouldn’t be judgmental about those promoting sin and debauchery.

Or perhaps it would be better to just label him the false teacher that he is becoming.

I like his father and I did like the small booklet he wrote years ago, I think it was called, “Good people don’t go to heaven, only saved people do”.

But, over the years, I find him to be more worldly in his preaching. I dunno how to explain it but I just couldn’t watch him anymore. Still love his dad though.

Isn’t Andy the fella’ that said parent were doing a disservice to their kids by going to a small church? I think so, so therefore I don’t think highly of Andy. I think he has succumbed to the idol of money and fame.

Kinda sums up my impressions. He’s coming across more as a motivational speaker. Why do we have to change the Biblical precepts of sin, redemption, and salvation just to appease this millenial generation? Wasn’t “The Old Rugged Cross” good enough in the past? I’m just so cognizant of the true Church of Jesus Christ falling away in these last days.

Read one of his books. Not impressed. Seems he hears the God of Success more than he hears the God of the Gospel.

Have you ever noticed how the aging, boy preacher crowd all have the same fidgety, hand-gesturing style (Mark Chandler, Ed Young, Jr., Mark Driscoll, et al.)?

I looked at a couple of short video excerpts and checked an article or two and think that he flirts with the temptations of most mega churches. Being more of a life coach emphasizing the need for a large community of support that a large group of ethically minded people can provide is nice but not for everyone. He seemed to get into some controversy when he spoke deprecatingly of smaller congregations. The very reasons he emphasized are good about a huge megachurch - such as separate large programs for different aged children and teens and adults are why many people avoid huge churches. I had a hebrew professor tell me he went to a smaller 500 or less populated congregation is because he wanted his family to not be separated into groups with there own age and experience as a family and church body all the aspects of coming together as a community as much as possible. I didn’t discern anything theologically incorrect but the things emphasized and focused on in modern church culture in a mega church can quickly become more of a distraction and more about modern culture. One size doesn’t fit all and there are both good and bad things about megachurch kimgdoms but the megachurch might in fact turn out to be more of a negative in the US than than a positive concerning God’s Kingdom purposes.

We attend Browns Bridge in Cumming and we love Andy. I came from a hell and brimstone type church in my youth, now 75 years of age and seeing my clearly my path with Jesus.

He’s nothing like his father. Very “new age” and shallow. A social club with emphasis on appearance, money, and the size of the church (not the spirituality). My nephew and his wife have attended there for about 10 years because it’s so big they can be obscure. My sister won’t attend when she visits. Too “airy-fairy” with no theological depth.

Before one of the last two elections — ‘08, I think — he invited Michelle Obama to speak there and she accepted. I’m not sure if she ever did — heard there was a brouhaha about the invite.
