With limited information it is difficult to tell. Most spirits which attach and cause problems are not demonic, they are merely misguided lost souls who have fallen under the influence of demonic spirits. They are afraid of the Light.

The problem is that when a spirit leaves their physical body and does not go to Heaven, they still hold the memories of the physical and emotional pain that caused their death. Since they do not have physical bodies, they do not feel it.
