i understand the theology. but the more time I spend with dogs, cats, and horses... the more I come to the realization that they are at least as intelligent and soulful as humans, and more so in some ways

I agree. I had a horse that had a very high awareness of himself, and was very intelligent (Arabians usually are). And when I think of Secretariat, who loved posing for the cameras and KNEW he was something special, I am in awe. But, animals can only go so far, no matter how special they are. Humans have an added dimension that was given by God.
